President's Column

Dear Fellow Members,

Here are a few notes about January’s club board meeting. Members may access the full report on our website.

EHCT: By now you have received a letter from me regarding the possibility of club withdrawing its participation in the Easter Hill Country and instituting our own annual fund-raising ride. If you haven’t already, please go on our website and give us your opinion.

Pedals & Pizza: From time-to-time we plan to offer a club social time after select rides. Our first will be after the April 11th Cibolo ride and the club will buy lunch for members and visiting riders at Catalonos on Main St in Cibolo. If it’s well received we try similar events at other rides.

New Maps: Kelly Sile, our Executive VP is in the process of producing new maps for all rides. Each route will have its own map with turn-by-turn instructions and a disclaimer. Please let us know what you think.

Schulenburg Painted Churches Ride Last year I was invited by a group to an informal ride around Schulenburg which stopped at several old, restored Catholic churches in the area (they are known as the Painted Churches). It was a beautiful ride, approximately 45 miles of country roads and, regardless of one's religious beliefs, you can't help but be awed by the architecture and art of the churches.  Most can be entered and so we took our extended breaks at each to enjoy them.

The Wheelmen are putting together a similar ride and invite you to come with us.  It will be on Saturday, April 18th with a rain date of April 25th. The wildflowers should be out and they tend to be prolific and very beautiful in the Schulenburg area. We will start with a 25 mile loop in which we will visit three churches followed by an optional 20 mile loop to catch the fourth.

It will take up most of the day so plan on getting back home mid to late afternoon. After the ride we can do a group lunch at Frank’s Restaurant (great country cooking). More details can be found here.

Tell us about your favorite rides – We’d love to hear about rides which were special to you and what made them so. From time-to-time I visit with someone on a club ride and they tell me about their experiences and it blows me away. Don’t keep those stories a secret, share them with the rest of us. Who knows - you may inspire someone else to do that ride or something similar. Send us a short write-up about it, where was it? When did you do it? What made you pick that ride? What made it particularly memorable? Send them to articles@sawheelmen.com and we’ll post them either on our website or Facebook page. FYI - We may edit them a little for length or clarity.

Got a suggestion for a new club ride? It would be hard to imagine that we have not ridden every road in the surrounding counties but it’s possible that you have a favorite which we have yet to discover. Come on – share your toys with the rest of us. Please send any suggestions and/or maps to Cindy Kuenzi, our Ride Chairperson at rides@sawheelmen.com. I can’t promise we’ll use them but we certainly will look at them.

Here are a few organized rides coming up soon:

LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour in Stonewall March 28th

Easter Hill Country Tour April 3-5

Tour de Castroville April 8th

View Bicycle Rides – Texas for a comprehensive list.

I’ll see you on the road.

SAW Exchange

We’ve created a section of the website that can be used to buy, sell, or trade cycling equipment. The Wheelmen Exchange is a free forum for you to advertise cycling equipment and cycling merchandise that you wish to buy, sell, or trade. Ads will remain in this forum for no longer than 3 months. Commercial advertisements will not be published.

If you have a cycling or cycling-related item that you would like to buy, sell, or trade, please send an e-mail to advertising@sawheelmen.com. The subject should be what you want your ad to say. Include a brief description, price, and your name & contact information in your message. You can also include a photo of the item(s) (it must be less than 1 MB). Once we receive the message, we will review it and then post the item. We will not post any advertisement that appears to be questionable in nature. Any transaction is between the buyer and seller. We do not guarantee anything and do not accept responsibility for any transaction in which you participate. You should notify us once your transaction has been completed.

If you have any questions please send them to advertising@sawheelmen.com.
