2015 Program Highlights

We have planned an exciting conference featuring oral abstract and poster sessions, skill-focused workshops, one-on-one career mentoring, and plenary sessions addressing issues of national and international importance. Confirmed plenary sessions include:
  • Kathleen M.  Carroll, PhD - Yale University School of Medicine, and Roger D. Weiss, MD - McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School will speak on – The Role of Counseling in Office-Based Opioid Treatment
  • Lynn Paltrow, JD - National Advocates for Pregnant Women will speak on – Advocacy at the Intersection of Drug Policy Reform and Reproductive Rights
  • H. Westley Clark, MD, JD, MPH - Santa Clara University and Retired Director, Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, SAMHSA, and Keith Humphreys, PhD – Stanford School of Medicine will participate in a Debate on – Substance Use Confidentially Laws:  Helpful or Harmful?
  • Ingrid A. Binswanger, MD, MPH, MS - Kaiser Permanente Colorado, Jeffrey Bratberg, PharmD, BCPS - University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy, and Elizabeth M. Oliva, PhD - VA Palo Alto Health Care System, will participate in a Panel Session on – Implementing Naloxone Rescue Kits for Opioid Overdose
  • Raul Caetano, MD, MPH, PhD - The University of Texas School of Public Health - 2015 Betty Ford Award Recipient, will speak on Drinking and Alcohol-Related Problems among US Hispanics
  • Michael Botticelli, MEd - Director - White House Office of National Drug Control Policy - 2015 John P. McGovern Award Recipient, will speak on – What Is Recovery?  Recovery Oriented Systems of Care

Call for Abstracts and Workshops

ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS of recent substance use-related research and education innovations in one of three categories:
  1. Research – These abstracts report on original research and must include methods, data analyses, and results.
  2. Program and Curricula Evaluation – These abstracts report on evaluations of innovative programs and/or education curricula and must include methods, data analyses, and results.
  3. Clinical Case Presentations – These abstracts describe an illustrative case that reinforces specific learning objectives for substance use and medical education.
WORKSHOP SUBMISSIONS that focus on building specific skills in clinical practice, education, research, community action, or policy/advocacy related to substance use.  The most desirable workshop sessions will focus on a set of concrete skills or techniques that can be attained and practiced by participants in 90 minutes. Workshop proposals from presenters trained in any discipline will be welcome.

Conference Travel Awards

Up to 15 full or partial Travel Awards* (including travel, hotel accommodations, and conference registration) are available for the 2015 AMERSA National Conference. NIDA has provided these funds to accomplish specific goals: to include educators and researchers from underserved racial/ethnic groups, target professions not heavily represented in AMERSA, and ensure that attendees disseminate the knowledge they acquire to broader audiences.   (Previous travel award recipients may apply for a second year of funding and WILL be expected to submit proposals.)
Applications must be received by May 15th.
 
Applicants must be:
(a)      Health professional educators or researchers, or researchers in training (e.g., doctoral students)
(b)      Conducting substance use and/or alcohol-related education, training and/or research
 
Preference will be given to:
(a)      Health professional educators who are Latinos, African Americans, or women
(b)      Members of health professions that AMERSA is targeting for increased participation (e.g., but not limited to: nursing, social work, psychology, dentistry, allied health professions)
(c)       Individuals with the ability to disseminate knowledge and skills from the national meeting to their students, trainees, residents, or interns, who provide services to underserved populations
(d)      Individuals who submit an abstract, poster or workshop presentation (Previous travel award recipients may apply for a second year of funding and WILL be expected to submit proposals.)
(e)      Individuals involved in research focused on underserved populations, particularly Latinos, African Americans, or women, or whose audiences work with these populations

Substance Abuse

The official journal of AMERSA - Substance Abuse - is a quarterly, peer-reviewed, high-impact print journal in its 4th decade of publication.  Substance Abuse offers wide-ranging coverage for healthcare professionals, addiction specialists and others engaged in research, education, clinical care, and service delivery and evaluation.  The journal welcomes original research, brief reports, case studies, commentaries, editorials, and letters to the editor and is accessible in all prominent indices. Complete author guidelines are available (http://www.amersa.org/ConIns.asp), and manuscript submission occurs electronically via ScholarOne Manuscripts (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/wsub).  On average, first decisions on manuscripts are communicated within one month of submission, and accepted papers are published online (ahead of print) within 3-4 weeks of a decision.
