Marching forward

Old Man Winter may not be done with us yet—but Vine Leaves Literary Journal is marching firmly toward Spring

February can be tough. Regardless of whether the groundhog saw his shadow, the bitter cold can linger, and for some parts of the world, it almost seems as though Winter is just beginning. Our condolences!

Whether you're trudging through snow, a lack of motivation, or—ahem—some last minute deadlines, the good news is: March is around the corner!

But for some of you, that means you have just ONE WEEK to submit your vignettes for Issue 14, or your collection of work for the 2015 Vine Leaves Vignette Collection Award. The deadline for both is February 28, 2015.

Remember, all accepted vignettes for each issue of the Journal will be considered for inclusion in the annual print anthology, and, the winning collection receives $500 cash and publication by Vine Leaves Press. Plus, this year's guest judge is Sara Sargent, an editor at Simon Pulse, an imprint of Simon & Schuster!

Go ahead, send us your best stuff—we'll be here waiting!

Already submitted? Awesome! Pat yourself on the back, pour yourself a glass of wine, and scroll down to see what you missed this month while you were pounding away on those deadlines.

Blooming Vine Leaves in the News!

New youth section attracts front page attention

When an inspiring class of students from Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin High School in Ohio submitted their vignettes to us last issue, we knew we'd stumbled on something special—an opportunity to foster young writers and showcase blooming talent.

We weren't the only ones to see the potential for greatness.

The students—and Vine Leaves Literary Journal—made the front page of the News-Herald, with a fantastic article about what inspired the students' submissions, and how they're work inspired our new section in the Journal, Blooming Vine Leaves. Check out the story here!

We have exciting plans for Blooming Vine Leaves in 2015, and we can't wait to share them with you. So, if there are budding young artists in your midst, please encourage them to submit—we're excited to see what lands in our inbox!

Sampling the Wine: Beyond the Pale — Short Stories by M.V. Montgomery

Jessica Driscoll reviews this collection of short mysteries with quirky endings, comedic undertones and a heavy dose of the supernatural.
