EXPLORERS Update
February in Explorers is all about building partnerships. Our 3rd graders spent the month at Pocahontas State Park, learning about predator/prey relationships, habitats, adaptations, and more! We partnered with Rangers Jared & Dan to offer unique insight into the lives of snakes, turtles, & beavers. Our 5th grade students will be traveling out to Luck Stone's Boscobel Rock Quarry to examine geology, natural resources in Virginia, and to see how a working quarry runs! We are especially appreciative of all the work Environmental Manager Mark Williams and the plant managers at Rockville & Boscobel have put in to arranging our trip to Luck Stone.
Bottom left: Educator Dustin leads students on a "bingo hike," where they looked for examples of decomposers, animal habitats, and different kinds of trees. Bottom right: Explorers Educators Liana, Jenny, and Stephanie get some laughs when sharing the classes' new beaver classmate. He was built to highlight the adaptations beavers have to survive in their environment.
Nominate a youth for our
Outdoor Leadership Institute
We are now accepting applications for next summer's Outdoor Leadership Institute (OLI) program! Dates, nomination process, and complete details are available on our website HERE.  If you have a high school student in your life, please consider nominating them for this epic leadership opportunity!
On February 7th, the OLI Crews gathered to delve into the topic of food access. Guided by Duron and Nicole from Renew Richmond, the crews toured local corner stores and grocery stores in search of produce and wholesome food. We talked about food deserts and access issues as we went, comparing our own memories and experiences with food and community. We also visited Ellwood Thompson's in Carytown and talked about local produce, seasonal variety, and GMO's, sampling delicious goodies as we went. We look forward to working with Renew Richmond again next month when we visit their farm!
