Dear Parents of STA Alumni:

Enjoy some photos from a busy year at St. Albans.

Cathedral Choristers to Perform at Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall

The Cathedral Choristers will be involved in two exciting and different musical events in Washington, D.C., and New York City this month. The Senior Choristers will make their debut performance at Carnegie Hall on Sat., Feb. 21. Joining with the Washington Chorus, choirs of Trinity Wall Street in Manhattan, and the orchestra NOVUS NY, they will perform the rarely heard Turbae ad Passionem Gregorianam, a monumental setting of the Passion by Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera. The Junior Choristers will collaborate with the Washington Ballet at the Kennedy Center for the world premiere of the ballet Sleepy Hollow, by Septime Weber, with music by Matthew Pierce. The ballet will run Thurs. through Sun., February 19–22.

“A Life Worth Living”

Headmaster Vance Wilson offered his annual Parent Dinner talk in January. Displaying a paperback book and an iPhone, Mr. Wilson told parents assembled in the ever-over-crowded Cafritz Refectory: “We live in a phenomenal world with machines that can lead us remarkable places. As we go through our stops and starts, and love our children, let us re-state our values to them and with them seek wisdom always.” Mr. Wilson’s full speech is available online.

A Call for Volunteers at STA

If you still cherish memories of volunteering at STA, remember, you can still help out! Every year, parents of alumni are invited to assist with Flower Mart. Signups for Flower Mart are going on now; if you’d like to be involved, please write to FlowerMartDC@gmail.com or call fellow parents of alumni Lucie Patton (301-938-2861) or Lydia Benson (202-365-3222). For more about Flower Mart 2015, visit facebook.com/FlowerMartByAllHallowsGuild.

Fall Service Projects

Many thanks to our Lower School boys, who collected gifts and food for others this fall. The final count: 3,000 cans of food + 312 Christmas toys + 506 pounds of candy for others = 1 Generous Lower School. Not to be left out, Upper School boys and teachers raised $3,050 for Giant Foods gift cards to provide Thanksgiving meals for families in need.

SUMMER AT STA

Registration Open for 2015 Summer Programs

We are proud to offer a wide variety of summer camps and academic classes for boys and girls from elementary school to high school. In addition to offering its usual camps and classes, this summer STA will be partnering with Capital Fencing, Headfirst, and i2 Camps (provider of middle school STEM camps). As our field project progresses, and we’re confident the tennis courts and fields will be available, our list of offerings may grow. For up-to-date information and to register, visit www.stalbansschool.org/summer.

School of Public Service Accepting Applications for 2015
(Day and Residential)

The St. Albans School of Public Service (SPS) is currently accepting applications for the summer 2015 program (June 21–July 18). SPS lasts only four weeks each summer, but our students describe it as “life-changing.” At SPS, 35-40 rising high school seniors from the D.C. area and all over the United States use the case study method to undertake an in-depth exploration of government, politics, and public service. Financial aid is available. More information about the program, including the applications process and last summer’s daily blog, is available on the SPS section of the St. Albans website: www.stalbansschool.org/sps. Interested students or parents may also call 202-537-5286 or email SPS Director Suzanne Woods (swoods@cathedral.org).

CAMPAIGN UPDATE

STRIVE Campaign

We’re excited to report that the athletic field renovation is on schedule. As long as the snow and rain stay away, the fields will be ready for fall 2015 sports—and probably summer programs, too. About half way through the project, STA’s Director of Capital Projects offered this virtual video tour of the future fields.

The STRIVE Campaign has surpassed the halfway mark, having raised $27 million of its $50 million goal, with $16 million in gifts and pledges for the athletic fields. For more information, visit www.strivecampaign.org. A camera on the Cathedral’s central tower offers a live view of construction.

Annual Giving News

To all of our “graduated” parents who have supported Annual Giving this year—thank you! If you have yet to give this year, please consider doing so during the STA100K Challenge. Broad support from alumni parents is essential if we are to reach the goal of 1,000 donors by March 17, 2015. Every gift will be maximized if we succeed in the STA100K, which in turn helps sustain our unique education. To contribute, or to check if you’ve participated, please call 202-537-6409. You may also give online via the school’s secure website: www.stalbansschool.org/onlinegiving. Thanks!
