Job Board helps source young talent

Smart Waikato’s FAN Youth Job board is hitting the right note with employers keen to hire bright, young staff.

Len Guilford, of Thorburn Engineering, recently hired former Hamilton Boys’ High student Daniel Rollo as an apprentice after advertising the role on the job board, a member-only forum sending youth work opportunities directly to educators and work brokers throughout the Waikato.

“We had lots of applicants for the job and the thing that set Daniel apart was that he was specifically interested in light fabrication. Many of the others were just interested in getting a job,” he said.

Len sees the job board as a way to connect with educators directly to tell them what sort of staff member he is looking for.

“It works well because the careers teacher can put forward the students they think will best fit the vacancy. It helps weed out time-wasters,” Len said.

Employing young staff and using the job board is part of Len’s long-term strategy to grow a skills-base within his small and growing business.

“We see young talent as the lifeblood of not only our company but of our entire industry. Young people are essential to the future of our business and the future workforce,” he said.

Thorburn Engineering employs 12 staff including Daniel, who is commencing a light fabrication apprenticeship.

Len Guilford, of Thorburn Engineering, says the future of his business is dependent on young talent like Daniel Rollo, light fabrication apprentice and former Hamilton Boys' High student.

Stellar enterprise initiative opens doors to all youth

The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) is piloting a new initiative in Waikato-King Country to better support all the region’s young entrepreneurs.

YES Connect has been launched this year to include entrepreneurial Years 12 and 13 students not participating in the programme through their school.

The launch follows a stellar year for the business programme in the region with Waikato Diocesan School for Girls team Just Kidding Babysitting bringing home the 2014 Supreme National YES Award and being named the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Company of the Year.

The experiential and entrepreneurial business competition has traditionally been school-centred, with students unable to participate if their school does not offer the programme.

YES Connect gives students the chance to participate independently, offering mentoring support and assistance with pitch delivery outside school. A teacher will merely be required to register the student at the beginning of the competition running from February to October.

YES BUSINESS MENTORS WANTED

Support young Waikato-King Country entrepreneurs by becoming a mentor for the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme
Mentors will meet with students at set times on a voluntary basis. This is a great way to give back.

FAN to launch in Thames-Coromandel

A high-profile business leader is calling for Thames-Coromandel employers to up the ante when it comes to hiring young people.

Thames businessman Grahame Christian, of nationwide waste management business Smart Environmental, is so passionate about employing youth he is supporting the launch of FutureForce Action Network in the district, in partnership with Thames-Coromandel District Council and Work and Income.

“I think all employers have an obligation to think about what the future workforce in the district will look like and contribute to that as best they can. They can do this by giving young people better opportunities at work, whether it is work experience or full time employment,” Grahame said.

Smart Waikato's FAN gives businesses of all sizes access to a robust on-line suite of free human resource tools to help them offer better work opportunities to young people. The event is free for employers, educators and other leaders and will be held at Toyota’s Thames Vehicle Operations on April 29.

“FAN is a great initiative, especially for smaller employers who don’t have in-house HR expertise. Employing young people in a safe way is to have a set of systems in place and FAN can help with that in a simple but effective way,” Grahame said.

FAN events in Hamilton and Matamata have attracted hundreds of leaders, inspiring and equipping them to offer more work experience, jobs, apprenticeships and cadetships to young people.
