Being the Change...                                                              February 2015
In just 18 short months, JWF has worked hard to deliver on our promise to help support families with children battling Aplastic Anemia, raise awareness of this disease and also to make a very significant investment in research. Thanks to the incredible and humbling generosity of all of our supporters and donors, we have:

Assisted a total of six families, allowing a parent to stay by their child's side during the toughest fight of their life.  Please keep our latest friends in your thoughts & prayers:
  • Joseli is 21 years old.  She was diagnosed in 1997 and went into remission, but she recently came out of remission and is being treated at Children’s Hospital Boston. We are able to pay her mortgage for 3 months.
  • Jillian is 14 years old and being treated at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia after being diagnosed in 2014. Her mom has stopped working to care for her and they have a significant distance to travel for her medical care. We are fortunate to be able to provide financial assistance for travel and lodging.
Funded the first of two $60,000 "Julia Malsin Research Grants".   The Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation has partnered with us and will match our investments, for a total of $120,000 going toward research in Julia's name.

We are humbled by your generosity and commitment to our Foundation and helping us Be That Important Change for Aplastic Anemia.

Operation Wear Red (OWR)...
JWF is kicking off Aplastic Anemia Awareness Week, March 1-7,  with our inaugural awareness campaign called Operation Wear Red. Schools, businesses, and sports teams are participating in OWR by simply picking a day during awareness week getting coloRED! It has been great to see all the creative ideas organizations and students are coming up with to participate in this event! Don’t miss out on joining us and seeing all your friends on our  FACEBOOK page.  You can also participate by making a donation or a purchase from Julia's store.  For more information on how your team or company can participate, please contact us today.
Again, we thank you for your support!

The Julia Effect...
The 'Julia Effect' is a selfless act of generosity that has transpired in Julia’s honor and memory. We continue to be overwhelmed as we continue to receive word of new acts of kindness from across the US.
Driven by Julia's spirit and memory, Robin Curtin is using her talent and love for beading and creating bracelets to help raise money for our foundation.  Please click here to learn more about this incredible woman and how you can order her beautiful works of art.
Julia's dear friend Molly Fitzpatrick was always by her side and was a great source of strength and support during Julia's illness.  Molly is continually inspired by Julia and most recently cut 8 inches off of her hair and donated it to Pantene Beautiful Lengths in memory of Julia.
Taylor Harrington never had the privilege of knowing Julia but has been moved by her story. She has donated blood twice in Julia’s honor.
Tori Seiden, another wonderful friend of Julia’s, will collect donations in lieu of gifts for her Sweet 16th Birthday this month.
Several friends of Julia's collaborated on the first of a series of beautifully touching videos about Julia. It has been a difficult three years without Julia’s physical presence, but thankfully, through her friends’ words, people will always know the wonderful daughter, sister, friend and inspiration, that she continues to be to so many.
New Partnerships and Supporters...

Sharing America's Marrow (SAM)
SAM began with two sisters, one of whom has Aplastic Anemia without a bone marrow donor match. Their goal is to hold bone marrow drives in all 50 states, adding 50,000 new names to the registry.  JWF is thrilled to be partnering with SAM by hosting a bone marrow drive at Iona College in April.

Western Connecticut State University (WCSU)
WCSU's Ancell School of Business selects area non-profits to work with a Strategic Marketing class in the MBA program. The class provided strategic guidance across several key areas and presented strategic recommendations for JWF to explore. We are now working with an undergraduate advertising class to review, analyze and recommend concepts that we may integrate into our social media platform and website. We will also team up with their nursing program to host a bone marrow drive at WCSU on March 7, 2015.

Our Latest Hospital Partners
We are excited to be partnering with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Hackensack University Medical Center.  As our network of hospitals increases, so too will the numbers of families that can have access to our Foundation.
Giving Thanks...

Kent Pumpkin Run
A sea of over 340 red jerseys, with a picture of Julia & the Aplastic Anemia awareness ribbon on the front and our Team Julia's Wings on the back, flooded the streets of Kent, CT for our 2nd Annual event at the Kent Pumpkin Run. That Sunday afternoon, we were united for a cause, and brought together in memory of Julia, her fight and her story. Not only did we raise awareness of Aplastic Anemia, but our foundation raised over $45,000 thanks to the generosity of our supporters and donors.
