Ash Wednesday

On February 18, the Rev. Ledlie I. Laughlin and the Rev. Claire Nevin-Field distributed ashes to hundreds of commuters in Jefferson Station, and welcomed many others at two beautiful services in the church.

One of our Facebook friends had this to say: "Thank you, Rev. Laughlin, for my ashes this morning at Jefferson Station! I am so grateful that, once again, St. Peter's was there to start my Ash Wednesday!

Music Notes

A message from Interim Music Director Bruce J. Barber II

First, let me again say thank you for such a lovely welcome to the Saint Peter’s community! I have heard many stories about this parish’s hospitality, and I can now say I have experienced it first hand! It has made this portion of my time away from Chicago most satisfying.

Second, it is clear to me that it is clear to YOU that the music program (choristers and adults) is a core ministry of Saint Peter’s Church. So many of you have volunteered to be that second person at chorister rehearsals, to be chorister walkers (even in bone chilling cold weather), to assist via the music committee, and to sing in the Adult Choir. It is the mark of a spiritually aware and mature congregation. I honor this congregational self-knowledge and encourage you, as a congregation, to hold fast to it. Music is core to the very life of this congregation. Read more »

Lent Madness

By the Rev. Claire Nevin-Field

For the past few years one particularly fun (!) Lenten discipline available to anyone courtesy of Episcopal priests Scott Gunn and Tim Schenk is Lent Madness. Very loosely based on the popular basketball “March Madness”, Lent Madness consists of a bracket of saints who square off against each other in daily match-ups, with the goal of winning the Golden Halo at the end of Lent. Each day you can go to the Lent Madness site and vote for one of the two saints described there. Whichever saint wins the day advances to the next round until there is only one left, wearing the halo. This is a fun way to learn about well known and lesser known saints of the Church, to see how they lived out their faith, and perhaps to be inspired to imitate them.

Faith Matters: Lent

10 a.m. Sundays through March 22

Christians see life in terms of a journey; coming from God and returning to God. Pilgrims have sought to consciously walk this journey for millennia, both the journey inward to the true self and the journey outward--usually to a place considered to be sacred. We will first look at the interior journey with pilgrims & mystics. After the journey within, we will look at places of pilgrimage. Finally, on March 22, Marilyn MacGregor will lead a session on Art and Pilgrimage.

Join us every Sunday at 10 a.m. for Faith Matters. We meet in the auditorium on the second floor of St. Peter’s School.

Lenten Evening Program

Wednesdays through March 25 following evening meditation

Join us for an exploration of services from places to which Christian pilgrims have traveled for centuries. We will use Eucharist services focusing on Celtic and English pilgrimage sites such as Iona, Salisbury, Canterbury, and Lindisfarne. The program begins at 6:30 with a light supper followed by a brief introduction to and explanation of the service, then the service itself. Questions? Contact Claire

Easter Memorials

It has long been the custom in the church at Easter to offer special gifts in thanksgiving or in memory of someone or some occasion in our lives. This Easter offering is how we fund our flowers and special music on Easter. Please submit the name(s) of the person (s) whom you wish to remember or give thanks for to the parish office by March 23. You can email Kate at randall@stpetersphila.org, or drop in the collection plate  Sunday morning. Thank you for your generosity.

Music Director Search Update

The music search committee (Claire Nevin-Field, Lathrop Nelson, Peggy Hatch, Andrew Westerhaus, Kate Julyan, and Barbara Elliott) have developed a music case statement--a vision for music ministry at St. Peter’s. We are now working on a job description which we hope to have complete and posted by the end of March. While we hope to have someone in place over the summer, there are still many steps to take and we will take the time we need in order to find the person who is the best fit for us. If you have questions or comments please contact any member of the committee. Read more on our blog.
