Let’s Play Ball

Saturday, March 21, 2015

On March 21, the History Museum will open a new exhibit, Let’s Play Ball.  From the early 1900s to the present day, the exhibit will depict aspects of the game from local community teams to professional baseball players who have a San Mateo County connection.  Baseball has long been part of our Peninsula’s culture, from kids learning to play in youth leagues to Burlingame’s unique bicycle baseball fundraisers. Major Leaguers such as Barry Bonds and Keith Hernandez grew up in the county.  Con Dempsey played for the Redwood City Merchants, one of the 92 semi-professional teams that existed in San Mateo County, before joining Lefty O’Doul’s San Francisco Seals. After playing in the Minor League, Jim Liggett settled on the Peninsula where he became the winningest girls’ softball coach in California.

Highlights of the exhibit include one of Keith Hernandez’s eleven Gold Gloves and bats belonging to local legends such as Ty Cobb, Joe DiMaggio and Willie Mays. The exhibit will also have jerseys, equipment, historic photographs and signed fan memorabilia.

Two Notable Women,
Two Notable Mansions

Courthouse Docket

March 7, 2015

On Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m., the Courthouse Docket continues as the Museum Auxiliary presents a play, Two Notable Women - Two Notable Mansions. Researched and written by the Museum Auxiliary, the play explores the lives of Sarah Winchester and Harriett Pullman Carolan.  Winchester is best known for the famous “Mystery House” in San Jose. She also owned a dozen properties in the San Francisco Bay Area, including a home in Atherton and a house boat, sometime’s called “Sarah’s Ark,” in Burlingame. The houseboat shared a driveway with Crossways.

In 1894, two years after marrying Francis Carolan,Harriett Pullman Carolan built Crossways on 30 acres
in Burlingame. Although Francis liked playing polo at Crossways, Harriett was not satisfied with the house. In 1912, she purchased 554 acres in Hillsborough to build the Carolands Château.

Intro to Collage Making,
Historic Pictures of the Peninsula

Courthouse Docket

March 28, 2015

On Saturday, March 28 from 1-4 pm, artist and instructor Leah Lubin presents Intro to Collage Making: Historic Pictures of the Peninsula.  Create a historic photo collage of the San Francisco Peninsula in this fun and interesting workshop. The History Museum will provide replica historic photos, but attendees are welcome to bring their own photographs of the Peninsula to personalize their art piece.

Born in Haifa, Israel, Lubin moved to England when she was six years old. By the time she was 14, she knew that she wanted to be an artist, and at the age of 17, she enrolled in the Barnet College of Art, part of the London University system.  She moved to the United States in 1979, and became an American citizen in 1986. Leah now makes her home in California. An accomplished painter and author, Lubin’s art has been featured in print, television and radio in the United States, the United Kingdom and Israel. Lubin's acrylic on canvas photo collage, A Day of Art in Downtown Palo Alto, is pictured above.
