DIGGING DEEPER

“The Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised” (Genesis 21:1). Wow! What a powerful statement! Let that one sink in for a moment…God did as He said He would do; He did what He promised He would do.

Looking back over the account of Abraham thus far, it has been a wild ride and a long path. God first visited Abraham when he was 75 years old, called him out of his comfort zone and took him to a foreign land where he knew no one. God promised him a land and a lineage, but the circumstances spoke differently. Year after year Abraham faced difficulty, danger and insecurity about God’s promise, leading him to, not once but twice, hide his true relationship with his wife, put her in danger in order to protect himself and his position in the land, commit adultery to provide an heir, and fight battles against strong kings to protect his family. He wavered along between faith and fear and I would imagine many times he wondered whether God really was who He said He was and whether God would really do what He said He would do. But the faith Abraham had, he continued to put in the Lord. He remained in Canaan and He continued to worship God.
And then…25 years later…God did exactly what He promised. “Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him” (Genesis 21:2). God did exactly what He said He would do, at exactly the time He said He would do it. Remember when God originally gave the promise He didn’t give a timeline, but when He visited Abraham and Sarah 24 years later He promised that within a year they would have their son and sure enough, that’s exactly what happened.

How incredible is that! We serve a God that actually does what He says He will do. In a world of deception and sales gimmicks; in a culture where you have to be on your guard in order to remain undeceived, how amazing is it that we have someone that we can turn to that we can trust will always be true to their word. And not only that, but one who is also powerful enough to actually make good on every promise He makes. Nothing can prevent Him from keeping His promises! Not even biology!
We’ve all heard the saying that God’s timing is not our timing, but even more than that, God’s timing is always perfect, He is never late on His promises. It may not be our timing, but when He delivers it is always at exactly the right time because He knows the big picture and He knows what we don’t. Is there something in your life where you’ve given up on God because the circumstances seem overwhelmingly impossible or the timing between now and when you last felt God’s hand of provision has been so long? Bring that thing to the Lord, because He hasn’t given up on you and He loves you enough to know when the right time is. He always keeps His promises. He is the solid rock and He is the only thing in this world that can truly satisfy and He always, read that again, ALWAYS has your best interest at heart. He is trustworthy. What do you need to entrust to Him today?
