Refuge in the Mountains

It was during the later part of December that we first made contact with a group of 16 Yezidi refugee families that had fled from their homes on Mt Sinjar and made their way here to the mountains. The snow-capped mountains that towered over their make-shift camp – a few half-finished concrete buildings – served as a constant reminder that winter was not going anywhere soon. They were cold, poor and very desperate. Since then we have provided them with warm winter clothes, kerosine oil for heating, food and just last month held a medical clinic to tend to their needs.

Fast forward to today...  These dear families, along with another 44 Yezidi refugee families located just a few miles away, are now being asked to vacate their makeshift camps and find another place to live. We have grown to love these precious people and know that if it is within our power to help, then we must do something. We have since found a great plot of land in a farm valley on the outskirts of town - ideal for us to build a new refugee camp. The local mayor has donated the tents and so we are now making final preparations with the local government to care for these desperate Yezidi families.

Would you pray with us that God would continue to give us clear direction and the financial provision for the this next big endeavor. Pray too for these dear Yezidi families who have gone through so much. I was heartbroken as we listened to several men share how 15 of their daughters had been captured by ISIS and sold off as slaves or brides for jihadist fighters.

It would seem that everywhere we turn there is a tragic story, people who are in desperate situations. We are surrounded by great challenges, but also with the opportunity to respond with the love of Jesus – no strings attached. Sometimes it requires true faith... to give when you don't feel you have anything to offer. We are learning a lot about that kind of faith...  You could say we are simply learning what it means to live the Christian life.

I do hope you can spare a few minutes to watch the below personal video update from our first "challenging" nine months in Northern Iraq. Be sure to also check out the compelling documentary film on the Kurds and the Kingdom of the Gospel called "Better Friends Than Mountains" featured at the bottom of this eNewsletter.

Christmas in Kurdistan

Our first Christmas in Kurdistan was in many ways a bit surreal. It was strange not seeing Christmas trees or hearing holiday music everywhere. That being said, we did enjoy the special times we had with our family and friends remembering Christ's birth. Tim actually spent much of Christmas eve and Christmas day delivering kerosine oil to widows of Peshmerga fighters... something he'll never forget.

The kids loved opening presents that arrived in parcels from overseas and care packages from our supporters. If you'd like to send a package to us then send us an email to tim@flickerflame.org and we'll give you the details.

Winter Break on Korek Mountain

After a very busy end to 2014 and equally hectic start to 2015, we managed to get away for little break. Just 20 minutes drive is the ski lift (Telefric) that takes you to a resort on the top of Korek Mountain. And so along with the Ray family, we spent a couple nights enjoying 24/7 electricity and "fume free" heating.

It was so much fun playing in the fresh snow that came down and taking in the majestic views that surrounded us from the top of the mountain.

Super Elliana Becomes a Big 4 Year-old

On January 24, our big girl just got bigger... and to celebrate we had a SUPER HERO party! In typical Buxton family fashion, we all dressed up as super heroes and celebrated the coolest, most super 4 year-old in the world!

We just love Elliana's big heart. She loves to draw and has become quite the artist. She is also a very big helper, especially when it comes to taking care of her younger brother and sister... Oh, and she loves helping Mommy cook dinner.

Helping Peshmerga Widows

In times of war, it is always the families of those serving on the front lines that pay the greatest price. For us here in Iraqi-Kurdistan, our family is able to live and serve here because of the many brave Peshmerga fighting to protect us from ISIS.

It was a true privilege and an experience i'll never forget to visit the grieving widows and families soldiers that died in battle. Tragically, one woman we visited had lost all three of her sons - all of whom were married and had children. Because of the many  who had given so generously to our Refugee Emergency Fund, we were able to deliver a barrel of kerosine oil (for heating their homes) to each family and honor them personally for the incredible sacrifice they have paid.

FAI Medical/Media Team

We had a great time hosting a small team from Frontier Alliance International Mission (faimission.org). They spent five solid days providing medical clinics to hundreds of refugees here in this region. Some of the team members were busy filming the documentary "Better Friends Than Mountains".

All in all, it was a really special time reaching out with the love of Jesus to so many precious families. We also had a great time getting to know the guys on the team and hearing about their passion for the Gospel to be proclaimed here in the Middle East.

"The Refuge" Nears Completion

There has been a lot of progress at "The Refuge" community center as we enter the final stages of construction. The second floor multi-purpose hall was tiled and the sub-ceiling installed. We also needed to repair and reconstruct a wall surrounding the soccer field. It is exciting to be on the verge of a fully functional center that will enable us to serve our community in a much greater capacity.

The Refuge Video Update

At the start of 2015, we are seeing the finishing of the Refuge Community Center Project. A vision that began over 6 years ago to provide vocational training for widows, educational classes for orphans, and now housing for refugees recently fleeing ISIS. Rejoice with us in all that God is doing to bring about His redemptive work in this land.

"The Kurds Have No Friends But The Mountains"  – Kurdish Proverb

As Sarah and I consider all that God has done in our lives to bring us to this place here in Iraqi-Kurdistan, we can't help but feel that we are on there verge of something significant. Over the past nine months we have seen the worst of humanity in our own backyard, but we have also witnessed the incredible favor and mercy of God.

We believe with all our hearts that this great Gospel of hope – the grace of God found in Jesus Christ – is ready to be shared far and wide in this often forgotten land. Just last month we had the privilege of being part of the filming of a feature documentary that tells the tragic history of the Kurdish people, the mounting geopolitical conflict in the Middle East, and the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Although there are many other people far more worthy to be featured in this documentary, we do feel it is an extremely insightful and moving film. To learn more about the film visit faimission.org/about-the-film/ or click on the image below to begin watching now.
