Sunday Bites is an exciting new initiative at the Nexus Community Gallery. A forum to explore and discuss cultural and artistic interests. Performances, talks, music and play- readings are all part of the mix and celebrates the wonderful range of creative people within our community.
Sunday Bites was kick-started in October last year with a talk by Shelley O’Keefe on Banksy and his contribution to street art. It looked at his political and social comments as well as his wit, influences and views on art and art galleries.
In November, the audience participated in the first public reading of a play by Elizabeth Routledge, author of the popular production ‘Flooded’, entitled A Tes(x)ting Time. Set in the Bellinger valley, the play explores, amongst other things, the impact of ‘texting’ on our lives. Was it comedy or drama? In line with what we know and love about the author’s previous work, it was a bit of both. For the audience, attending a play reading meant witnessing a play’s birth and the audience reactions and feedback became part of the creative process.
In December 7th we enjoyed Duo Minerva, classical guitarists Karin Braidwood and Kari Winer, who took great advantage of the excellent acoustic qualities of the Pop-up in an intimate recital.
From 2015, Sunday Bites is on the second Sunday of the month. On March 8th, architect Philip Senior will talk on ‘New Sydney Architecture – Sustainable towers and works by Frank Gehry, Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano’. In April, celebrated local photographer Jack Meagher will talk about ‘The Importance of Meaning in Art’ – of all the ingredients essential to an enduring and important artwork; is meaning the essential ingredient?. May sees local poet John Bennett talking about art as ecological intervention and in June, Kim Pitman will talk about explorations of the art of nature as she walks with women in the bush.
We have been really pleased with the interest and support shown for this recent Community Arts Council initiative. We welcome suggestions for future events and would love to hear from anyone who would like to run an event or who has ideas that we could follow up. If so, please contact either Shelley O’Keefe (shelleyok@bigpond.com) or Rosie Wickert (rw@rosiewickert.net.au).
