The season of Lent in the Christian Calendar begins on Wednesday 18th February. Lent is traditionally described as lasting for forty days, in commemoration of the forty days which Jesus spent, before beginning his public ministry, fasting in the desert, where he was tempted by the Devil.  You can read about the account in Matthew 4.

The traditional purpose of Lent is to prepare the believer through prayer, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement and self-denial. This event, along with its customs are traditionally observed by Christians mainly in the Anglican, Methodist, and Roman Catholic traditions. More recently though, other churches have developed an appreciation for some of these traditions. This year, we’re getting involved too through the #40acts project organised by the UK charity Stewardship which helps us as a church with our giving.

The idea behind #40acts is that instead of just giving up something for lent, we consider “doing it generously” by thinking of one thing we could do for someone else daily for the 40days starting from this this Wednesday.
