The Wise Wife
& The Wisdom of Marriage
The heroic ode to the "Excellent Wife" in Proverbs 31 is remarkable, not only for its portrayal of feminine virtue as strong and active.
What is really remarkable is that this the ideal woman of Scripture -- a wife, a mother, and community paragon -- stands at the conclusion of the book of Proverbs as an exemplar of biblical woman. In a book addressed mostly to the task of educating young men, the excellent wife "is the crown of her husband" (12:4).
The picture of the Excellent Wife as the crowning achievement of wisdom also teaches us something about the wisdom of marriage. Contrary to the autonomous, individualistic message of contemporary feminism, the Excellent Wife labors for the good of others, and the security and provision of her husband, her children, and the needy members of her community.
Just in time for a snow day or two, here is "The Wise Wife" and a few other new sermons in our Proverbs series.
