2014 Reader's Choice Poll

This is the 2nd year for our Readerâ€™s Choice Award which will include all titles published by RDSP in 2014. The first step is a poll anyone can vote in.

This round narrows the field to 4 titles. A team of readers will then read and evaluate all 4 books to choose a winner.

Women in Horror Q&A Recap

We had originally planned our Women in Horror panel discussion as a bookstore event at Ukazoo Books in Towson, MD. However, there was a big snowstorm the day of the event so we had to postpone (the new date is April 26th, 2-4pm).

We decided to take the event online by doing a Google On Air Hangout instead. Though we had never done one before it turned out fabulously. All the panelists had amazing insights to share! Now you can watch the panel on YouTube.

Women in Horror Spotlight

As part of our celebration of Women in Horror Month we put together a series of short, timely interviews with women whose books we've published.

Lucy Snyder: "When I was starting out as a writer, supportive boyfriends were few and far between. One boyfriend read one of my stories and asked me 'Why canâ€™t you write anything nice?' Another, who had literary ambitions of his own, looked disdainfully at a contributorâ€™s copy of a magazine that had come in the mail and sniffed, 'Well, I could do that, too, if I wanted to be in some silly horror magazine!'" Donna Lynch: "I am rarely treated with blatant disrespect by my peers, but in both my writing and music career, I often have to 'prove' myself harder than the guy next to me. That's why I wouldn't want to write anything with the intent of getting a female audience. Horror should be gender-neutral. Everyone feels fear." Read the full spotlight interview.

Maria Alexander: "It bothers me deeply that we still use the adjective 'strong' before the words 'female character' just so we can talk about someone with integrity, courage, agency and intelligenceâ€”someone with a character arc that doesnâ€™t leave them dead on the sidelines or merely rescued. Sheâ€™s a whole person, someone with concerns that donâ€™t involve 'getting a man.'" Read the full spotlight interview.

Stephanie Wytovich: "I love being able to find the gorgeous in the blackness, the lovely in the dark. Whether Iâ€™m writing dark fantasy, gothic prose, or splatterpunk gore, I think thereâ€™s something valuable in monstrosity, and sometimes I think it takes the graphic and stark realism of tragedy for us to learn from our past and present in order to have a better future."
