Dear Minnesotan Wolf Advocates:
Right now Minnesota’s U.S. Senators Klobuchar and Franken are considering supporting federal legislation that will lead to more dead wolves. We, the supporters of wolves, need to call Senators Klobuchar and Franken to let them know we are against this legislation.
What’s at Stake
Bills HR 884 and HR 843 have been introduced to the Committee on Natural Resources of the U.S. House of Representatives. These bills will remove the gray wolf from their current protections under the Endangered Species Act. Wolves face unique challenges because they have historically been killed simply for the sake of killing. Losing federal protections sets wolves up to be killed, over and over again, to the edge of extinction.
Special interest groups are pushing for legislation that will put wolves up for hunting at the state level again, rather than follow current laws that help the endangered species survive. Historically, all states have implemented a recreational wolf hunting and trapping season once wolves were no longer protected.
Our Solution
Howling For Wolves has offered a middle ground solution that will still allow for farmers to use lethal means to control wolf conflicts, while at the same time will provide protection for wolves by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. This means that the wolves in Wisconsin and Michigan could be down-listed from “endangered” to “threatened,” rather than being simply moved from their current “endangered” status into the crosshairs.
It is vital for Senators Klobuchar and Franken to know that a reasonable solution is now before the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service, and that no congressional action is necessary.
