Register now for the Barza e-discussion on nutrition!

Dear broadcasting partner,

Nutrition is a cornerstone of good health. Yet it is often overlooked in radio broadcasts that talk about farming and food preparation.

It is well-known that eating a nutritious diet keeps disease at bay and helps us live active and productive lives. But the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that, globally, 805 million people suffer from chronic hunger and 161 million children under the age of five are stunted.

According to the 2014 Global Hunger Index report, 16 countries have alarming or extremely alarming levels of hunger – and most of these are in sub-Saharan Africa. This raises a number of questions, including:

  • Why does hunger continue to be so prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa?
  • What does the right to access adequate and culturally-appropriate food mean for good nutrition in Africa?
To consider these and other questions, Farm Radio International is convening an e-discussion on nutrition. We invite African radio broadcasters to discuss questions like: What is nutrition? Why is it important to talk about it? What are the linkages between agricultural production and nutrition? What does gender have to do with nutrition?

These questions will be tackled during a facilitated discussion on the new Barza Discussions platform from March 9-31, 2015. The discussions will be held in both English and French.
We invite and encourage broadcasters to sign up for this important discussion with fellow African radio broadcasters and nutrition experts, who will be our special guests throughout the discussion.

Our special guests will be:

Joyce Kinabo, a professor of Human Nutrition in the Department of Food Science and Technology at the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro, Tanzania

Boitshepo Giyose, a senior nutrition officer at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization
