10) New CLIA publication: Grandparents Parenting on PEI

Legal Information for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Island families have a long history of extended family members playing a big role in raising children. However, it is becoming more common for grandparents to take on the role of primary caregiver to their grandchildren. In 2014, CLIA received funding from the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program to create a legal booklet for grandparents raising their grandchildren. The development of this resource was informed by telephone surveys, online surveys, and focus groups with grandparents to hear directly from grandparents themselves regarding their needs.

Grandparents Parenting on PEI is available for download at
http://www.cliapei.ca/sitefiles/File/publications/PLA17.pdf.
Hard copy booklets will be available soon. To receive a free copy by mail, please email clia@cliapei.ca.

11) PEIBWA Upcoming Events

12) Save the Dates - Invite to Presentations on Sexual Violence

You are invited to attend two outstanding presentations in early April, including:

1. An interactive lecture/photography presentation, featuring Voices and Faces Project founder Anne K. Ream called “Lived Through This: Thoughts on an Eight- Year Road Trip Spent listening to Sexual Violence Survivors.”

In her presentation, Anne reflects on the lessons she’s learned from the remarkable women and men she’s interviewed, considers new models for creating a safer and more just world for victims, and challenges conventional thinking on how survivors heal – all through the sharing of the stories of those she’s interviewed. Anne’s presentation, which debuted at the Clinton Residential Centre, will make its Canadian debut in PEI, with a special emphasis on a community of survivors from PEI who were interviewed and photographed for this award-winning documentary project.

Thursday, April 9, 7 pm Rodd Charlottetown Hotel

*****************************

2. “Nobody’s Victim: Language, Culture and Change”, a presentation and conversation with author and cultural critic R. Clifton Spargo. In his presentation, Spargo challenges us by exploring questions such as:

How do media representations of rape and abuse shape public attitudes? What role does language play as advocates and activists seek to frame the issue of sexual violence, while calling the public to action? Why is the creation of new forms of media so critical to challenging a world that too often allows, and even encourages, violence against women? How are survivors “taking the narrative back” through the sharing of their own testimonies?

Friday, April 10, 12 – 1:30 pm Rodd Charlottetown Hotel
Lunch will be provided. Space is limited, so you need to pre-register by calling 902-566-1864 or by e-mail at admin@peirsac.org.
These presentations are being organized by the PEI Rape and Sexual Assault Centre with funding from the Donner Canada Foundation and the PEI Premier’s Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

14) Going West: How Government Policies are Forcing Workers to Leave Home

A community forum connecting the stories of temporary foreign workers and Islanders working out west

Saturday, March 14 from 2-4pm
(Storm date March 15)
Alice Duncan Centre, 544 Maine Street, O’Leary

Islanders know what it’s like to have to leave home for work. We’ve been doing it for generations. Today, unable to make ends meet on the Island, more and more Islanders are migrating for work while their homes remain on PEI. Many of these workers send money home to support their families.

PEI has also seen a rise in international migrant workers working in the Island’s fields, fish plants, and many other industries. Facing many of the same pressures as the Islanders who go west, these workers come to PEI as temporary foreign workers, seeking higher wages to send home to their families in their home countries.

The forum will connect the stories of these two groups of workers. The forum will include presentations about the economic forces and government policies that are contributing to the rise of forced labour migration globally and on PEI. Presentations will be followed by group discussions and a chance for temporary foreign workers, Island workers, and other community members to share personal stories about the causes and impacts of leaving home for work.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
  • Islanders who have worked out west
  • Islanders with family and friends working out west
  • Temporary foreign workers
  • Local decision-makers
  • Curious community members
Refreshments will be served.
The venue is accessible and the event is child-friendly.
Money is available to reimburse participants for the costs of travel, childcare, and eldercare.
