HHS Head: No ObamaCare Backup Plan

The Obama administration has no contingency plan if the Supreme Court strikes down subsidies at the heart of ObamaCare, Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell said in a letter to Congress on Tuesday. "We know of no administrative actions that could, and therefore we have no plans that would, undo the massive damage to our healthcare system that would be caused by an adverse decision," Burwell wrote. Burwell had previously declined to say whether the administration has a backup plan if the Court strikes down subsidies for millions of people under the law in the case of King v. Burwell, set for arguments March 4.

Results Out from ICD-10 End-to-End Testing Week

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reports that end to end testing conducted January 26-February 3 resulted in 81 percent of test claims accepted from providers, clearinghouses, and billing agencies. CMS says that most claims that were rejected "didn't meet the mark because of errors unrelated to ICD-9 or ICD-10." Approximately 660 providers and billing companies submitted nearly 15,000 test claims. Two more end-to-end testing weeks will be held before the October 1, 2015, compliance date for ICD-10. Read more about the testing results.

HIM Director Ranks 27th on “Best Jobs in America” List

The role of Health Information Management Director has ranked 27 out of 100 in CNN Money's 2015 "Best Jobs in America" list. The list includes positions that not only "offer great growth opportunities, but ones that are satisfying as well." Other factors in the ranking include current pay as well as how fast pay is increasing, and how many jobs are in the field. Job growth statistics used for the list are taken from Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers for 2012-2022, and job satisfaction scores come from a survey of 400,000 workers by PayScale.com.

CMS-Sponsored ICD-10 Preparation Classes for Physicians, Small Practices, and Rural Health Care Providers

CMS is scheduling introductory ICD-10 classes designed for physicians, practice managers, billing managers, and others who need help in transitioning from ICD-9 to ICD-10. These are free, in-person classes, not webinars. (For online classes and in-person classes outside our region, visit www.roadto10.org). More than 50 classes will be offered in all eight States in the southeast during the months of March, April, and May. Hospitals and other groups throughout the region have graciously agreed to host the classes for CMS. Several courses will be held in Mississippi.

AAFP's Work With NCQA to Improve PCMH Program Seeing Results

NCQA. Four letters that stir strong emotions in the heart of almost any family physician who has tried to achieve patient-centered medical home (PCMH) recognition from that organization -- the National Committee for Quality Assurance. I know this not only because I've heard from AAFP members who have been through the long, tedious and costly process, but because I've done it myself -- twice. But what's important to realize is that NCQA has for years been an important partner in advancing the PCMH. Since 2007, the AAFP has worked closely with the organization to advance practice transformation based on the PCMH Joint Principles(3 page PDF), and it now looks as though those efforts are paying off.
