d.tech weekly update 3.9.15

Design Tech High School poster featured in "What's Next in Next Gen" blog. "The project truly shows a key aspect of effective design, taking something that otherwise could be routine and designing it in a way to bring delight to the end-user."

Dear d.tech families,

Staffing Update in Math:
We have just finished reorganizing the structure of the math department to ensure that all students continue to make progress in math.  Ilene Mitchell will be overseeing the three math classes, and will be assisted by a tutor in her classes.  We will finalize the hiring this week, and I will send out an update once everything is in place.  We are have had some very strong candidates and expect this change to go rather smoothly.

Growth Mindset:

At the end of February students took part in a Stanford study aimed at building a growth mindset.  Having a growth mindset means that failing can push you forward if you have the right mindset about your ability.  If you think that you failed because you are inherently not good at something, then you will give up and continue to fail.  If you think you failed because you have not practiced enough or put in enough effort then you have a growth mindset and are well positioned for long-term success.  We are going to keep working with students to help them replace phrases such as "I can't do this."  with phrases such as, "I haven't practiced this enough."  You can read more about it here.  Over time you should see more of a growth mindset in your kids.
