Got a Business Idea? Enter the Finger Lakes Regional Contest by March 8
The Finger Lakes Regional Contest of the New York Business Plan Competition submission deadline is Sunday, March 8 at 11:59 p.m. Send your idea to susanna.virgilio@rochester.edu in one of six categories:
- Biotechnology / Healthcare
- Energy / Sustainability
- Information Technology / Software
- Nanotechnology / Advanced Technology
- Products / Services
- Social Entrepreneurship / Non-Profit
A two-page written application is all that is required to enter (a full business plan is not necessary). Regional semi-finalists will be invited to present their business ideas at St. John Fisher College the evening of Wednesday, April 8. Then, the Finger Lakes winners will go head-to-head with finalists from across the state for a chance to win $500,000 in cash and in-kind prizes on April 24 in Albany. The competition is open to currently enrolled graduate and undergraduate students from any discipline. Visit the website to learn more and download the application. Institute for Data Science Lecture: 3/3
The Institute for Data Science presents "Data, Predictions and Decisions in Support of People and Society" on Tuesday, March 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Eisenberg Rotunda, Schlegel Hall. Join Eric Horvitz, distinguished machine learning researcher, American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow, and managing director of Microsoft Research, to explore how data science is being used to advance the good of society. Horvitz will discuss how breakthroughs in large-scale data collection, predictive models, and decision-support systems are solving previously intractable problems in clinical medicine, public health, transportation, disaster recovery, and many other areas. Horvitz is also a member of the advisory committee for the Institute for Data Science. The lecture will be followed by a reception with lunch. No RSVP is necessary.
Entrepreneur-in-Residence Office Hours in March
Seeking advice from a seasoned entrepreneur? Take advantage of the University of Rochester Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIRs) program. Gregg Steinberg, managing director of Charlemagne Global Advisory and serial entrepreneur, will hold office hours on Tuesday, March 10 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Wednesday, March 11 from 9 a.m. to noon. Michael Wohl ’89, managing partner of ClimateHedge Investments and Greenspace Capital and a serial entrepreneur, will hold office hours on Thursday, March 26 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday, March 27 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. All March office hours for both EIRs will be held in 3-131 Carol Simon Hall (3rd floor).
