Sunday School Corner

A New Addition to our Newsletter from the Children & Youth Committee

Sunday School Corner is a new addition to the monthly newsletter that will allow everyone to see what goes on in Sunday School at Calvary: the lessons the children are learning, the bible verses they are memorizing, the activities they are participating in, and the special relationships they are forming with the other children in Calvary's congregation. Sunday School may be the most important education our young children receive and that early education benefits us all throughout our adult lives.

The picture below is of the new bibles that were purchased specifically for Sunday School. A copy will be available on Sundays if anyone would like to take a look at one. The new "Adventure Bible" is a treasure trove of resources. Not only are the new bibles amazing by themselves, The Adventure Bible website also gives us a wealth of free resources to get kids engaged and excited about God's Word and help them grow in their faith. Our Sunday School ministry can register for over 700 free resources including:
  • Children's sermon outlines / Activity sheets
  • Illustrations / coloring pages
  • Printable Bible memory verses
  • Crosswords
  • Word searches
  • Timelines
  • Bible maps
  • Fill-in-the blanks
  • Topical Index
Sunday School Corner will be a tribute to the growing Children and Youth Ministry at Calvary UMC. Thank you to Christina Kautchick, Calvary's Children & Youth Director, as well as the Children & Youth Committee of Calvary for all of your hard work in cultivating this ministry and helping it to grow.

However, there is still much to be done to continue the growth of this most important ministry. Most importantly, volunteers are needed for Sunday School teachers, and volunteers are needed to be members of the Children & Youth Committee itself. You are not required to have children to help in this ministry. Everyone is encouraged to take part in any way they can. All the help will be needed to handle the growing list of activities for 2015 which include a Children's Choir and a Christmas Pageant! But these activities will only be possible if the leadership of this ministry grows as well. Please contact either the church office or Christina Kautchick directly if you would like to volunteer or participate on the committee.

Snow Day - No Sunday School

Sunday, February 22nd, 2015

Lesson
The book of Ruth and its wonderful story of selflessness and generosity. It has been said that kindness is a language of love. Those who make it a point to be kind, everyday heroes performing acts of kindness done in the name of Christ, are the building blocks of the kingdom of God and no one has to wait to be old enough to participate. In addition, we made "Love and Kindness To Go", which consisted of "Hearts of Kindness" coupons and "Someone Cares" pop-up cards to give away to others.

Bible Verses
Whoever despises his neighbor is a sinner, but blessed is he who is generous to the poor.  - Proverbs 14:21
Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.  - Proverbs 14:31

Prayer
Lord, thank you for the beautiful story of Ruth. We pray that you will bless the gifts of kindness we made today. May they bring comfort and joy. We ask these things in Jesus name, Amen.

"March Surrender" - 2015 Lenten Season

A Message from Reverend Ellie Laws

In United Methodist understanding, both lay people and clergy alike share in "Our Theological Task". That task is our ongoing effort to live as faithful Christians amid the complexities of a secular world.

John Wesley believed that the living core of the Christian faith was:
  • Revealed in scripture
  • Illuminated by tradition
  • Vivified (given life) by experience
  • Confirmed by reason
Wesley's Quadrilateral, as it is sometimes referred to, is an available approach to understanding scripture and gaining guidance for moral questions and dilemmas faced in daily living.

Beginning with the first day of March through Palm Sunday, you are invited to intentionally put this theological understanding to work by being part of mini-covenant group with three others persons from Calvary Church who will also commit to take part in what we are calling "March Surrender".

What is expected?
Mini-covenant groups will be formed by random assignment from those who wish to participate. In this way we hope to encourage the formation of new friendships and the development of deeper spiritual bonds throughout our congregation. There are no meetings to attend, other than what a mini-covenant group might choose to do. As a member of a mini-covenant group, you will have four basic responsibilities.

First, to pray for each person in your group every day during March Surrender.

Second, to be diligent in your daily reading of the scriptures. We will be reading through the gospel of Luke during this period, so you will be reading a little less than a chapter each day. We will provide a suggested reading schedule. (See below for the first week's list.)

Third, to be firmly committed to attending worship (if possible) each Sunday during this period and greeting the members of your covenant group. Suggestion: Perhaps, your group could gather at lunch after worship.

Fourth, to be intentional in your efforts to practice acts of mercy and helping others. At the end of each week, you should be able to tell of something you have done to help another person.

March Surrender Readings - The Journey Begins
March 1st thru March 8th
  • Sunday: Luke 4:1-13 The Wilderness reminds us whose we are.
  • Monday: Luke 4:31-44 Claiming God’s Authority for our lives.
  • Tuesday: Luke 5:1-11 Knowing Our Need for God.
  • Wednesday: Luke 5:17-26 Take a friend to Jesus.
  • Thursday: Luke 6:12-26 Blessings, Sacrifices and Warnings.
  • Friday: Luke 6:27-38 The Greatness is found in Love.
  • Saturday: Luke 7:1-10 Having Faith that Astonishes Jesus.

How do I sign-up?
It's easy. Please contact me then I will be in touch with the names of your mini-covenant group members as soon as possible. Please see me at church or you can also just give me a call at 302.682.4860.

Faithfully,
Rev. Ellie

Introducing the University Baptist Church "Jubilate" Collegiate Choir

Calvary is hosting a choir from Virginia on March 7th thru 8th. We are still in need of finding housing for a few more college kids and are looking for assistance. Lodgings will be for one night only. They will need breakfast in the morning and then a ride to Sunday morning worship. Please contact Brian Burns (724.388.3246 or bsburns77@aol.com) if you are able to provide housing for a choir member.

The "Jubilate" Collegiate Choir
Jubilate (pronounced yoo-bi-la-tay) is the auditioned choir for both undergraduate and graduate students at University Baptist Church. Jubilate performs a wide variety of musical styles and traditions from classical to contemporary. The group performs regularly at University Baptist Church as well as churches throughout Virginia. Jubilate undertakes a spring tour each year and has performed in New York City, St. Louis, Baltimore, Houston, Dallas, Denver, and many stops in between. For its 2011 tour, Jubilate traveled to New Orleans where they did relief work in areas still devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The 2012 tour will be to various stops through out New England. Six Special Offerings for Very Special Causes

A Message from the Missions Committee

Each year United Methodist Churches around the world receive a series of Special Offerings which are targeted at supporting specific ministries. The six offerings are promoted through bulletin inserts and other publicity in the local church.

As part of our attempt to keep Calvary aware of the missions and ministries of our denomination, we will promote these offerings and give you the opportunity to support them. Throughout the year we will share information about our church’s ministry and how to support it financially.

First Special Offering - March 15th, 2015

UMCOR - One Great Hour of Sharing

On March 15th we will receive the first of the six special offerings - the One Great Hour of Sharing offering - which supports our ministry to children, families, and communities who have experienced devastation in the wake of disasters. When disaster strikes, we receive special relief offerings, and brag that every penny is used to provide relief supplies. We can say that because the administrative costs of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) are supported by the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering.

You should know that UMCOR is the agency of the church that responds to natural and man-made disasters with water, food, medical, and other support. We have made the health, school, and birthing kits, along with the flood buckets, which they distribute world-wide.
We have shared in VIM trips to aid in disaster relief. Your gift to this offering will enable the United Methodist Church to continue to be on the front lines of caring for our neighbors in need.

Watch for the insert on March 15th, and be prepared to join in making it a very Special Sunday.

To learn more about UMCOR and all of the missions that are supported by this program, please visit the UMCOR website at:

8th Annual Race for Grace

Team Calvary is gearing up for the 8th Annual Race for Grace which is to be held on Saturday, April 11th. Calvary has had a wonderful show of support in past years, and we are hoping to increase the number of team members this year.

The 8th Annual Race For Grace 5K & 1 Mile Walk benefits the Reflections Of Grace Foundation. Race For Grace and its beneficiary Foundation are named after Grace Elizabeth Ekis, a precious 5-year-old who lost her courageous 13-month battle with a rare cancerous brain tumor on Valentine’s Day 2008. Grace’s cancer was a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a tumor of the brainstem for which there is no known cure and there have been no advances in treatment options for more than 35 years.

For more information, visit the website at http://www.reflectionsofgrace.org/index.php/8th-annual-race-for-grace.html

Please return the below registration form by mail or drop it off at the church (see mailing address for Calvary UMC in the footer of this newsletter). If you are unable to print the registration form below (right click on the registration form picture, choose "Save picture as..." from the drop-down menu, then print the saved picture), see Karen Ferguson for a form. A Message from Tammy Phillips

Greetings Calvary UMC folks from Tammy Phillips! Allow me to put a call out to anyone who is interested in assisting with the parking at the church during special events. You could either assist in the planning of the parking or you could actually help direct cars to the parking lots during the special events. • Messiah Concert (one-time event held yearly at 4:00pm on a Saturday or Sunday in December)
  • Christmas Eve Service (one-time event held yearly at 7:00pm)

Implementing Church Management Software Within Calvary

A Message from Karen Ferguson, Communications Team Chairperson

In February's newsletter, the idea of Church Management software was introduced. Over the next month, expect to receive an introductory packet from the Communications Team that will familiarize you with the software and assist you in setting up your individual access accounts. Please feel free to see me if you have any questions. I can be reached by email at karen.ferguson.15202@gmail.com or by phone at 724.448.1429.

In case you missed last months newsletter, the following is the article that was published:

Why did Calvary decide to get church management software?

Calvary is growing, and although that is a very good thing, it also comes with certain growing pains. One of those growing pains is keeping track of our growing congregation, making sure that this information is accessible, and having our growing congregation know what activities the church has to offer and when these activities are scheduled.

With a growing church, organization is not only a good idea, it’s essential. When it comes to church management, it is much easier to get organized when the job is manageable. Ask anyone at Calvary who has had to input a backlog of names, addresses, phone numbers, and emails from several different sources; needless to say, it's not fun and it’s extremely time consuming. Also, church staff and other members of Calvary need to have easy access to this information. When you're flipping through spreadsheets and fingering down pages, you will probably admit is not an efficient use of time. Also, having to add or update the same information in more than one place is, well, less than ideal.

Over the last year, considerable research has been done to find a church management software package that was a good fit for Calvary. The challenge was to find a package that was not too robust for our needs but also one that was not inadequate. The decision arrived at Church Office Online. This is an exciting new chapter for Calvary. Be alert for news from the Communications Team on this special project.

Lighting Maintenance

Over the next couple months, a special project will be taking place at Calvary. The lighting in the Sanctuary, Chapel, and Vestibule is to be enhanced. The historical fixtures will remain the same, but the interior wiring, sockets, and light bulbs are to be replaced. The new light bulbs will last anywhere from 15-20 years instead of a few months which is how often they need to be replaced presently. This project will allow for better illumination of our beautiful church as well as lowered utility costs.

Watch for more information within the upcoming weeks about a campaign to assist with raising funds for the lighting maintenance. The goal of the fundraiser is $26,000. An anonymous donor has offered to match every dollar donated up to $13,000. Expect more information is to follow shortly in both church as well as following newsletters.

If you would like to see what the new lighting will look like, there is one lighting installation that has already been updated in the Chapel area. As you will see, the historical fixture is the same, but the light being produced is significantly improved and the ceiling is now being lit as well.

Daylight Savings Time is Upon Us

Don't forget to turn your clocks ahead 1 hour this upcoming Sunday, March 8th.
