From March 10 to 12, the Phi Centre invites film buffs to the screening of the spiritual drama Words With Gods, a compilation of nine short films featuring a variety of religions and worshippers from different denominational contexts. The body of work will be presented for the first time in Montreal having already been screened at various festivals in 2014, from the Mostra in Venice to the Chicago International Film Festival.

“It’s time to know each other better.” That’s what director Guillermo Arriaga aspired to when he had the idea for the project. The Mexican filmmaker wanted a spirit of openness and respect to trigger a dialogue between different religions, and convinced eight other international directors to get on board with this vision. The feature film was produced section by section, with the filmmakers casting their gaze on the religion they were each brought up in. Without necessarily adhering to the doctrines of their particular religions, the directors were mandated to have first-hand knowledge of some of their traditions.

Words With Gods was directed by Guillermo Arriaga, Héctor Babenco, Bahman Ghobadi, Amos Gitai, Emir Kusturica, Mira Nair, Hideo Nakata, Warwick Thornton and Álex de la Iglesia, and British singer-songwriter Peter Gabriel wrote the original score. Words with Gods is also the first of four films that make up the revolutionary anthology series Heartbeat of the World, featuring themes of religion, sexuality (Encounters), drugs (To the Bloodstream) and politics (Polis).

Three screenings of Words With Gods will be presented from March 10 to 12.
