Welcome to our very first edition of "Neck of the Woods", NPAQ's weekly e-bulletin!

In this edition:

New Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef
The Hon Steven Miles MP is the Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection and the Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef.  This brings national park acquisitions and management a step closer to full integration, and the portfolio lays a strong foundation for recognizing the role that national parks play in the well-being of all Queenslanders.  Minister Miles met with all conservation groups as part of an environment round-table on Thursday 26th February.

12 National Reserve System properties
All 12 NRS properties remain ungazetted and are a priority for NPAQ in its preliminary discussions with Minister Miles.  At this stage, it is likely that The Canyon property will be the focus on surveys for Gouldian Finches and other endangered species as a result of the 2014 Christmas Appeal.

Springbrook National Park
Proponents of the controversial $100m Skyride project - a 9km cable car ride between Springbrook and the lowlands of the Gold Coast hinterland - are hoping to meet with the new State Government.  It is proposed that towers to support the cableway will be lowered into the national park to minimise disturbance to sensitive rainforest communities.  Meanwhile, work on the $400,000 suspension bridge at the base of Purlingbrook Falls continues.

Kondalilla National Park
Australian Canopy Tours have withdrawn their bid to build a zip-line above Obi Obi Gorge stating that "we were forced to withdraw our proposal to develop the zip line attraction at Obi Obi.....the negative publicity that appeared in the press caused our financial backers to withdraw their funding."
