In 2002 Paul created a small bronze titled 'Into tomorrow'. It was always his dream to have it made into a monumental piece and placed publicly. After his death in January 2014 I decided to have it enlarged and start exploring the possibilities of having it placed in a public space.
In May 2014 I hosted an event in Paul's studio, releasing his woodcut print to a group of collectors and friends. I voiced this vision that night, and a group of people came forward and offered to be part of the team. Architect Mark Thomas designed the 2 tiered plinth and the longest Rock Girl benches installed in Cape Town to date, Victoria Nel, Sean Weldon, India Baird, Marc Truss were all part of the team making this happen. The incredible mosaics were done by Lovell Friedman. Cape Town Heritage Trust came on board as promotors of the project.
Design Indaba Trust, Heritage Square, Travelstart and many private collectors of Paul's work and smaller businesses in the area helped to fund the project.
On Saturday 28 February we unveiled the sculpture and the benches, which is placed on Riebeeck Square, corner Bree and Shortmarket Streets, Cape Town.
There are 4 left of the edition of 8 of the original bronze.
