PRISM Symposium - Invitations Are Going Out!

If you receive this newsletter, we strongly encourage you to attend the PRISM Symposium on Wednesday April 29 as a guest.  Many of you are hoping to be involved in PRISM in the future and by attending the poster session, you can get a fantastic overview of the types of projects that could soon involve you!  Please be on the lookout for an electronic version of the invitation, which will include specific details and be emailed out to you early next week.  You will be asked to to RSVP if you are planning to attend.

Local Conference Alert!

Would you like to present at a conference this year, but don’t have the time to travel?  Are you hoping to boost your resume with another conference appearance, an oral presentation, or maybe even an award?  Then the 63rd Annual American Chemical Society's (ACS) Undergraduate Research Symposium is your answer.

Sponsored by the New York Chemistry Students' Association of the ACS's New York Section, the conference provides a rare opportunity to give an oral presentation right here in New York at Queensborough Community College in Bayside, Queens.  Plus, you’ll already have a poster ready to go since it takes place on Saturday, May 9, just a few days after our PRISM Symposium!

Ask your mentor about signing up.  Abstracts are being accepted until March 20 and then the early registration deadline is April 20.  Check out the conference website for the submission links.  If interested, speak with Ed about the possibility of PRISM help with the registration fee for students who are not members of ACS.

PRISM Outing to Body Worlds: Pulse

Spring break is almost here if we can just see past the final mounds of snow.  That means it is time for a PRISM-sponsored outing!  On Wednesday, April 8, PRISM students, prospective PRISM students, and partner students in the CUNY Justice Academy (CJA) are all invited to come together at the Discovery Center in Times Square to view their fascinating exhibit: Body Worlds: Pulse

This temporary museum exhibit showcases real human bodies that have been preserved using a special technique called plastination, thus revealing many aspects of anatomy and physiology not typically observed in models or through traditional preservation methods.  For more details about the event, click here for the emailed invitation.  RSVP to prism@jjay.cuny.edu as soon as possible to be sure to receive one of the limited spots, but by Friday March 20 at the latest.

Seniors - Any Good News to Share?

We are excited to learn that several of our graduating PRISM seniors are starting to receive acceptances to graduate programs or job offers.  We want to congratulate you and also to recognize you in our PRISM newsletters and perhaps at the Symposium.  Please be sure to let us know the details at prism@jjay.cuny.edu whenever you receive this type of news, especially once you have decided to accept an offer!  As you know, the tracking of this kind of good news is an important part of how we can continue to secure PRISM funding.

Poster Preparation Workshop - Wednesday March 11

If you are a funded or trained student, you should have received an invitation to attend the Symposium poster preparation workshop that will take place on Wednesday March 11 during community hour in room 05.67.00.  Like other meetings, lunch will be provided.  In contrast to other meetings, however, this one is aimed more directly at those students who will be presenting at the PRISM Symposium on April 29.

We expect every funded student to be in attendance even if you have prepared posters before.  Please RSVP by doodle to confirm your attendance.  If you can’t attend for some serious reason, please email Ed to request an excused absence and confirm that you will be in attendance on Thursday March 19 during community hour for a make-up session.

PRISM Participation in Research Week

We emailed all the details to you last week, but as a reminder, all seniors are being asked to represent PRISM in the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) poster session during community hour on April 29, the same day as our PRISM Symposium.

DO NOT register yourself if you are a graduating senior as we are taking care of that for you.  If any other students wish to participate, you are permitted to do so, but you must take care of all the details yourself including registration and poster submission.  We will continue to email seniors about this as the event approaches.

Upcoming Workshops and Lectures

Read below about opportunities to hear from some great speakers.  One only is a mandatory PRISM meeting, but consider attending any and all that you find interesting:

March 18:  Official PRISM Monthly Meeting – “Research and Opportunities at Northeastern University”  As always, the meeting will take place during community hour.  Funded and trained students are expected to attend and all other prospective students are welcome.  Details and a link to RSVP will be emailed to students next week.

March 24:  Prof. Prinz organizes a lecture series at John Jay which will continue this month. The second speaker for this semester is Paul Hatzinger from CB & I Federal Services.  His talk is entitled, “Identifying Perchlorate Sources Using Stable Isotope Analysis – Is Your Contamination from Rockets, Radishes, or Road Flares?”  All are welcome.  No RSVP needed.  For a schedule of all the lectures in this series, click here

April 15:  The New York Microscopical Society will host a lecture/workshop on “Bullet Analysis and Critical Angle Impacts,” to take place from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. in Clifton, NJ.  Students receive a discounted rate of $25, which includes lunch.  For more information about speakers and location, please view the flyer here.  Currently funded PRISM students who wish to attend may speak with Ed about the possibility of PRISM funds to alleviate the costs of this professional development workshop.

Chronicle - Don't Find Yourself on the Naughty List!

We are working feverishly to complete this year’s PRISM Chronicle and our deadline is quickly approaching.  If you are a student who did research in either fall or spring through PRISM, your deadline to submit your profiles, including a picture, is tomorrow Friday March 6.

If you have not yet done so, please email these items to Eric at edillalogue@jjay.cuny.edu and be on the lookout for emails that may be sent to you as a follow up to your submission.  Please visit the PRISM website here if you still need the link for what and how to submit these materials.
