Presidential Trivia

In researching our new Dr Pepper Presidents Exhibit, we have stumbled on many interesting facts about these outstanding leaders of Dr Pepper. Dr Pepper President Wesby Parker (1958-1967) is credited with the idea of serving heated Dr Pepper over a slice of lemon.  HOT Dr Pepper became a unique part of the famous beverage’s history.  Parker has a few lesser-known earlier (and less successful) attempts at incorporating Dr Pepper and its syrup concentrate into various food recipes. Dr Pepper Omelets, Dr Pepper Soup, Dr Pepper Mac & Cheese, Potatoes ala Dr Pepper were never as popular as HOT Dr Pepper.  His Dr Pepper Chili was famous at the company picnic behind the Mockingbird Plant. He intended to enter in the first World Championship Terlingua, Texas Chili Cook-Off but he died suddenly in January 1967.

Left behind is an interesting bean recipe which has been adapted for this year’s 10-2-4 Club Open House.  WESYBEANS are a sweet, fruity, and delicious baked bean dish that brightens any table. Made from navy beans, salt pork or slab bacon, a Dr Pepper based sauce and seasonings (paprika, onion powder, dry mustard, garlic powder, cumin, and cayenne pepper).  These ingredients are combined with water and apple juice and simmered until the beans reach a semi soft consistency.  Served hot they were a favorite at the Parker household on the Fourth of July, Labor Day and St. Patrick’s Day.
