ETHC the exception in BSMC
Total Healthcare's medical provider is being hailed by Treasury as one of the only groups that has successfully aligned its model of care with the Better Sooner More Convenient policy.
The national impact of the National Government's primary care policy (introduced in 2009) has been marginal, according to Treasury's briefing to the health minister, Jonathan Coleman.
Large multi-practice groups, like East Tamaki Healthcare, are noted as the exception. With its no appointments, walk-in only approach and nurse triaging, ETHC has several advantages in terms of patients’ access to care, compared to the standard GP operating model, Treasury says. Read full report

TH now a strategic DHB partner
Auckland and Waitemata DHBs are now including Total Healthcare in District Annual Planning.
Due to current DHB policy, Total Healthcare is unable to officially operate as a PHO in the districts. Instead, we work closely with ProCare PHO, which acts as a post-box for funding for all Central and West Auckland patients. That's all changed now with Total Healthcare being invited to take part in strategic and district annual planning.
"We've not been part of strategic meetings in the past, so it's a positive step we're closer to the district planning process," General Manager Total Healthcare Central and West Auckland Kate Moodabe says.

Patients are now being enrolled in Counties Manukau Health's At Risk Individual (ARI) scheme. ARI replaces the chronic care module and focuses on better supporting of patients with long term conditions.
Patients enrolled in ARI will each have a care coordinator, an electronic summary of their medical records available to healthcare providers and a goal-based, patient-centred plan to manage their conditions.
Total Healthcare has six care coordinators and we are developing care plans. Nearly 300 patients are enrolled in ARI.

Visit from Qatar health officials
Health officials from Qatar are touring New Zealand and made a stop at Total Healthcare. Executive officer Mark Vella and General Manager Central and West Auckland Kate Moodabe hosted part of the delegation to talk about system integration.
Hospital and primary care integration is a new concept in Qatar and the delegation of GPs, managers and ambulance representatives were eager to learn. The Qatar group was hosted by Ko Awatea and Counties Manukau Health (pictured), which ran a two-day programme for the delegates, before they headed south to Canterbury.
