Introducing your two new
Young ICCA Co-Chairs

Young ICCA welcomes two new Co-Chairs, Sylvia Tonova and Damien Nyer, elected by you, the Young ICCA Membership. We asked the new Co-Chairs to share a bit more about themselves and their goals for Young ICCA during their two-year term.

Young ICCA’s mission deeply resonated with Sylvia’s from her first encounter: “I grew up behind the Iron Curtain in a small town in Bulgaria. I would not have had the experiences or opportunities I have enjoyed if doors had not been opened for me in the past.”
Both Co-Chairs agreed that Young ICCA is positioned to promote diversity within the practice of international arbitration. Damien pointed out that “rightly or wrongly, international arbitration continues to be perceived as a closed club. I am convinced that Young ICCA, with its uniquely diverse and enthusiastic membership has a prime role to play.”

Young ICCA’s membership has grown at an incredible rate. Damien recognizes that one challenge is to “maintain the quality and consistency of what we do”. Together with current Co-Chair Kate Brown de Vejar, the three will focus on developing and supporting the work of Young ICCA’s four core activities: skills training workshops, the Mentoring Programme, the scholarship programmes and the Young ICCA Blog. Sylvia highlighted the fact that each of these activities is uniquely designed to further the mission of “opening the doors of international arbitration”.

Ten successful workshops over the past few months

Since our last Newsletter, Young ICCA has held no less than 10 workshops worldwide! Young ICCA members had the opportunity to attend events in Istanbul, Geneva, Tokyo, Prague, Dublin, Sydney, Dubai, Warsaw, Brussels and London.

The Brussels workshop (30 January 2015) was Young ICCA's first Moot Court. The participants were divided into three teams (one team pictured right): the claimants' team, the respondent's team and the arbitral tribunal. Each team was assigned a tutor, to guide and coach them throughout the day. After a bit of theory on interim measures, the participants were given the chance to immediately put their new knowledge into practice: the different teams were separated and with the help of their respective tutors, the claimants' team drafted the request for provisional measures, while the respondent's team drafted the objections, and each team defined its strategy for oral arguments. In the meantime, the tribunal's team, assisted by its tutor, drafted an outline order and prepared questions to be asked during the hearing.

The mock hearing took place in the afternoon: the claimants' team presented its case, followed by the respondent's team and by rebuttals for each team. After asking questions to the teams, the tribunal closed the hearing. Under the supervision of its tutor, it analyzed the different arguments and drafted the provisional measures order. During this time, the claimants' and the respondent’s teams received valuable feedback from their respective tutors. The tribunal then pronounced its order and the brave participants were welcomed by the President of ICCA himself, Professor Albert Jan van den Berg (Hanotiau & van den Berg), at a well-deserved cocktail reception.
The workshop's full report and pictures are available here.

In the following months, Young ICCA plans to host workshops in New York, Bahrein, Singapore, Philadelphia, Hong Kong, Houston and The Hague. More information will soon be posted on Young ICCA's website.
