Christ Church Notes
Week of Sunday, March 1st, 2015

Coffee Hour will take place in Taylor Hall

As a result of construction delays at the Bronxville School, Christ Church is hosting the Bronxville High School production of Sweeney Todd in our Undercroft.  Because of the props, staging and set, built by the Bronxville high school students, the Undercroft will be off limits for the next two Sundays.  The production will take place on March 7, 8 and 9.

Our teens had a fantastic week meeting over 1,000 high school students from Portugal and 500 new friends from France. Be sure to ask our young people about their experience - you can tell from the photos that it was a great trip!

Lenten Short Series - Begins this Sunday, March 1st

It is appropriate to think of Lent as a time to prepare for Easter.  In Lent, we test ourselves not only in physical ways, such as the ability to forgo what we desire, but also, more importantly, in spiritual ways.  Do we believe in Creation so that we can believe in Resurrection?  Approaching our understanding and belief in God is the subject of our Lenten Short Series.  To do this we are going to read Deepak Chopra’s The Future of God, A Practical Approach to Spirituality for Our Times.  Though not a Christian, Chopra advances a very compatible view of believing in God – a “notion of God in me”.  In addition to discussing his approach, we will also read excerpts from “the God-deniers” and those who find compatibility between the findings of science and a belief in God.

The Lenten Short Series will take place in the Crispell Lounge after the ten o’clock service.  It will be led by Hondi Brasco, John O’Neil, Jody Maier, and Warren Ilchman. Chopra’s book is available at Womrath’s and from Amazon; excerpts from other authors will be available the week before they are needed.

You may find Lenten Short Series Schedule here.

Screening of Codebreaker this Sunday, March 1st, 6 PM in Taylor Hall

The LGBT & Friends Fellowship is hosting a screening of CODEBREAKER, the 2011 drama-documentary of brilliant mathematician, pioneering computer scientist, and war hero Alan Turing, who was persecuted for his sexuality. The film’s Executive Producer, Patrick Sammon, will be on hand for a Q&A after the screening.

If you recently enjoyed the Hollywood version of Turing’s story portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch in “Imitation Game,” you will be interested to see a more factual representation of Turing’s life and legacy.

The film will be shown in Taylor Hall this Sunday, March 1st at 6:00 PM. Please invite your friends and help us spread the word about this exciting event! Please register online here to help us with our planning.

Centering Prayer: Tuesdays in Lent

Next meeting - March 3, 7:30-8:30pm

This week Centering Prayer will meet in the Crispell Lounge - please enter through the Church.

During Lent, all are welcome to try Centering Prayer on Tuesday evenings at 7:30. Since each of us will bring stuff from the day, including encounters with family, coworkers, strangers; and opinions, decisions, energy, fatigue, you name it! - we will wind down by listening to the word of God or Lectio Divina. Together we will read, reflect on, respond to and rest in a Bible passage. Together we will learn how to let go of distractions, and then we will sit quietly in God’s love. Afraid of silence? Don’t think you can’t sit still for 20 minutes? Just come and try! Centering Prayer is a practice, and that’s exactly what we will do - Practice. Contact Hondi Brasco or Debbie Cook with questions.

Working Mother's Fellowship: March 5th, 7:30 PM

The next Working Mother's Fellowship gathering will take place at the Bird home (7 Library Lane in Bronxville) on Thursday, March 5 at 7:30pm.  In addition to generously offering her home, Catherine will provide beverages, so please plan on bringing something to knosh on.
