For the week of March 1, 2015

"MPC This Week"
is a weekly publication of
The Media Presbyterian Church

Our vision is to be the spiritual foundation of a united and diverse Christian fellowship, committed to serving the Lord, to loving our neighbors and to actively supporting those in need in the broader community. To fulfill this vision, we are devoted to regular worship, prayer and discipleship.

Our normal Sunday morning worship services are at 8:15, 9:30 and 11:00.

Clear Vision Emerges
When snow moves through our region, TV weather maps often show us the “visibility” in various locations (2 miles in Philadelphia, a half mile in Atlantic City, etc.). Limited vision is a danger for drivers. In thick fog, near-zero visibility can bring traffic to a standstill – which is exactly what happens to a church without vision. In the words of Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (KJV), or in Eugene Peterson’s translation: “If people can’t see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves” (The Message).

Vision – the ability to “see what God is doing” in our midst – is essential for a thriving congregation. If we aren’t focused on who or what God wants us to become, we can move in a hundred different directions and end up right where we started. A clear vision empowers us to know when we’re getting closer, and to make appropriate course corrections when we’re not.

This week, our Session adopted the Mission and Vision Statements recommended by the Noah Team. They aren’t radically different from the statements we’ve been using in recent years, but they’re expressed in simpler, clearer language:

Our Mission is to love God and love our neighbor.
Our Vision is to be a Christian Community that worships together,
serves together, and grows together in faith.

These two, clear statements give us a metric for reviewing everything we do as a congregation by asking two questions:

  • Is it consistent with our Mission?
  • Will it help us fulfill our Vision?

To keep our Mission and Vision “in focus,” you’ll see them printed in our Sunday bulletins and other publications, starting next Sunday, March 8.

Keeping the Faith
A group of parents and other church members came to our Session meeting last week to express their support for our youth program. With John Chaffee’s impending departure on March 29 (Palm Sunday), there were concerns about how his responsibilities would be carried out in the coming months. I’m pleased to report that the Session responded quickly by authorizing recruitment of an interim Youth Director to begin as soon as possible. A job description has already been written and a committee is being organized to identify and interview candidates.

These are exciting times in the life of our congregation. We promise to keep you informed and to continue listening to your needs.

Faithfully,

Thank you!  Ned Erickson wishes to extend his heartfelt thanks for the hospitality and warmth that was shown to him and his family by the MPC Church family at Harvey Cedars. He hopes that he and his family will see us all again someday soon!

LENTEN LOAVES OF LOVE
provides a way for us to show our love for God and for our neighbors during this reflective season that culminates in the triumph and joy of the Resurrection. Your gifts to Lenten Loaves of Love will enable us not only to beautify our sanctuary with flowers, but also to share our love in a concrete way. The Women of MPC started LLL in 2003, so our church is observing the thirteenth year of this celebration.

During Lent 2015 we are supporting two Christian missions connected with MPC:
Chester Eastside Ministries and Compassion Corps Morocco Team, April 2015

In addition to these special Mission opportunities, your contribution to Lenten Loaves of Love will enable us to provide flowers to make our sanctuary beautiful for Easter and to cheer our shut-ins after the service.

Each $8.00 gift provides a single Lenten Loaf of Love. Gifts received by Sunday, March 22, will be acknowledged in the bulletin on Easter Sunday. During this season that culminates in the triumph and joy of the Resurrection, share your love for God and for your neighbors as you give a Lenten Loaf (or Loaves!) of Love.

Order forms are available in the Sunday bulletin or by clicking
here.

This week's devotion:

Long ago I heard a pastor say, "When we read Jesus' Parables, we tend to picture ourselves as being the good guy.  If that is true, then when we read about the Pharisee and the tax collector, we like to think that we would be the humble one who "went down to his home justified."

Luke 18:9-14 Revised Standard Version (RSV)
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank thee that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’

I like the way The Message translates Jesus' response, particularly in light of something our speaker said at the Harvey Cedars retreat.  "Jesus commented, ‘This tax man, not the other, went home made right with God.  If you walk around with your nose in the air, you're going to end up flat on your face, but if you're content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself.’”  As someone who can so quickly climb aboard her self-righteous high horse, I need to consider my place in the Shepherd's flock and seek how to serve Him there.
