We would like to invite you to take a brief survey on the CIES knowledge mobilization efforts. This survey seeks to examine the needs and the experiences of the CIES members in the area of knowledge mobilization, including publications, events, member communication/networks, and social media. Findings will be used to develop a CIES knowledge mobilization strategy for "moving the Society forward into a digital age" - both to increase knowledge accessibility, usability, and impact, as well as to improve internal networking and communication among the CIES members.

This anonymous survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

5. CALL FOR ARTICLES for a Special Issue of FIRE: Forum for International Research in Education

(Guest edited by Patricia K. Kubow, Indiana University & Allison Blosser, Loyola University Chicago, Co-Chairs, CIES Teaching Comparative Education SIG)

Special Issue: “The Place and Future of Comparative Education in Teacher Education”

Description: The teaching of comparative education as an avenue for scholarly inquiry remains underdeveloped.  The focus of this special issue is to begin to fill this void as scholars consider the place and future of comparative education in the context of teacher education.  Paradoxically, despite increased interconnectedness of nations and peoples, the global environment has not necessarily afforded comparative education equal footing with other courses in teacher education at colleges and universities.  In some instances, comparative education is not offered as a stand-alone course, but integrated into an existing teacher preparation and/or advanced education course.  Thus, the aim of this special issue is to examine the place and future of comparative education in teacher education at colleges and universities in the U.S. and elsewhere.

The kinds of questions to be explored in this special issue may include any of the following:

a) What curricular and policy issues are involved in the teaching of comparative education at the undergraduate or graduate level in teacher education program(s)?

b) What concepts and frameworks, theoretical perspectives, and epistemological positions within or applied to comparative education are important to teach in teacher education courses, and which comparative education concepts/theories/positions have fostered success and/or challenge to students?  In other words, to what theoretical perspectives and frameworks are students being exposed?  Why?  And, how do these perspectives help students think about (and in turn teach) those perspectives in their respective classrooms or chosen occupations?

c) What pedagogical approaches have proven useful or difficult in the teaching of international perspectives on education?  What are some of the practices that you as a comparative educator or practitioner have used to keep the field relevant to teacher education in your institution?  What methods, assignments, materials, and the like have proven to be useful?  How so?  And, how do you know?

d) What are the central purposes of courses that include a comparative education component, and what models and methods are available to help students examine enduring educational issues in international perspective?

e) What are the educational issues being taught, and how are you incorporating international perspectives in your teaching of those issues?

f) What are the barriers to integrating comparative education into teacher preparation and/or advanced levels of teacher education?

Next Steps: 1. Contact the guest editors as soon as possible to indicate your intent to submit.
2. Be sure to follow FIRE author guidelines in preparing your manuscript (see “Manuscript Submission Guidelines” at http://preserve.lehigh.edu/fire/manuscriptsubmissionguidelines.html).  3. Then forward your manuscript, with abstract, to the guest editors at pkubow@indiana.edu and ablosser@luc.edu by April 1, 2015.
