Psalms & Wisdom Writings
NEXT WORD for March 1 - March 7, 2015

Psalm 50 - Psalm 56

Thoughts for the week:
It may be paradoxical to consider it, but notice how human history has used Holy Scripture to establish religion, and yet so much of this same text shows a God who is not pleased with religion. Psalm 50 is just one small example of this. The very sacrifices that YHWH calls for throughout the Pentateuch, he now says he doesn’t want. Talk about a paradox! YHWH is seeking only one response for the gift of life he has given us: thanksgiving. What’s more, the psalmist calls thanksgiving a “sacrifice.” How can a simple response of thanks be a sacrifice? Maybe it has to do with all we try to offer God before we finally decide to be thankful.

Questions for discussion:
:: What would happen if during this season of Lent you replaced all the ways you try to please God with just one thing: thankfulness?
:: Jesus made it clear that our Father is not seeking adherents to a religion, but people who will enter into relationship with him. What areas of our lives can we replace religion with relationship?

Prayer for the week:
Father, we have offered you so many things that you truly do not want.  Teach us to be thankful. Make us more humble and open to deeper relationship with you through your son, Jesus.  Amen.
