Executive Director's Corner

IDPP Executive Director Dr. Derrick L. Cogburn photoGreetings! We have had an extremely productive and exciting month. We are excited to announce that our 2015 IDPP Fellowships application has opened, with options for candidates to pursue master's degree programs at three IDPP partner universities across the ASEAN region. We have also made significant strides on the research front, including our Accessibility in Global Governance study and our Comparative Case Study on UN CRPD Implementation across ASEAN. Research presentations were delivered at the ISA Global South Caucus and 2015 Annual Convention, where we also met with the prospective publisher for our book on the project. We also presented our work at the 30th Annual International Conference on Technology and Persons with Disabilities (CSUN) and attended the Third General Election Network for Disability Access Conference. IDPP Alumnus uses Architecture for Inclusion

IDPP alumnus Mr. Don de Vera is making his voice heard as one of Manila’s leading experts in accessible building design and architecture. As a professor of architecture and design at the Mapua Institute of Technology–Laguna, his alma mater in the Philippines, Mr. de Vera incorporates his expertise in architecture with his passion for disability rights. He also serves as a member of the Committee on Accessibility of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP), a role that allows him to lead participatory trainings on accessibility law and accessibility auditing to create inclusive environments at universities and private and public institutions across Manila.

“I believe that, as architects seeking to achieve change, we must begin by educating young designers and architects on creating barrier-free built environments,” says Mr. de Vera, who blends traditional concepts and methodologies in architectural design with key accessible design concepts and laws, such as Philippines’ building accessibility law (BP344), into his curriculum.

In 2014, Mr. de Vera conducted trainings at five universities; two private sector organizations; and two public institutions. A highlight of his activities occurred on 17 December, when he and other high-level UAP members met with Mr. Jejomar Binay, Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines, to discuss the foundation of the Housing Technology Resource and Exhibit Center.

Recently, Mr. de Vera was invited to join the Philippines live captioning team for the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction from 14-18 March in Sendai, Japan. He is honored to join this live captioning team which, for the first time in any Asian country’s history, is entirely represented by persons with disabilities. In preparation, he and others from the UAP Committee on Accessibility took part in a training co-organized by IDPP outreach partner Asia-Pacific Development Centre on Disability (APCD); Makati Social Welfare Department; and UAP Committee on Accessibility in January.

As Mr. de Vera continues to make strides in teaching others about accessible building design, he is reminded of the lessons in advocacy and capacity building he learned during his time at IDPP as part of the inaugural graduating cohort of the master’s in Comparative and International Disability Policy at American University’s School of International Service: “I believe that as an architect and graduate of IDPP, it is our task to share the knowledge we gain.”
