Entertain at Home

Homeowners today want to make sure they have enough space and appropriate furnishings to gather with family and friends at home. Whether they're coming together for a football game, birthday party, or holiday celebration—people love connecting with other people. It brings the warmth of love and laughter into their lives on a regular basis.

As you think about entertaining in your home, one of the things to consider is whether your home is divided into small, separate rooms. This type of traditional floor plan can be very confining in terms of furnishings and number of occupants per room. In addition, you may no longer wish to devote precious space in your home solely to one use—such as a dining room—given the value you place on every square foot.

One of the benefits of an open floor plan is its tremendous potential for entertaining. Wide open spaces means you can locate a media center, an entertainment lounge or a wet bar in the same general space as your kitchen and dining area. All your guests can mingle together, with traffic flowing easily from one area to the next—upstairs, downstairs, inside and out.

The New American Home (TNAH) 2015, which was open for tours during the International Builders' Show in Las Vegas, showcased the latest home building ideas and technology for remodelers and other building industry professionals across the country. TNAH is a perfect example of how today's home has morphed into one all-encompassing entertainment center, with the public areas relating to each other and to the outside. Multiple places throughout the home are available for people to gather.

The kitchen/dining/living area on the first floor connects via a floating stairway to a second floor loft overlooking the great room. The multipurpose loft features a crowd-pleasing entertainment area with ample casual seating and space for games and billiards. The fabulous back-lit stone slab bar incorporates a fully stocked mini kitchen. A comfortable wine-tasting area is located next to a temperature-controlled wine wall and cellar. Pocket sliding glass doors open up the loft to the outside deck.

Also connecting to the kitchen/dining/living area is a first floor media room. The space automatically transforms into a darkened movie theater experience with automated shades, a projector and a drop-down projection screen. The room includes pocket sliding glass doors and an indoor/outdoor wet bar that leads out into the courtyard.

Points to ponder:

1. Keep in mind the architectural style of your home. Your entertainment areas should blend in with the style of the rest of your home and transition seamlessly to the outside.

2. Make entertainment spaces comfortable and easy-care. Part of the enjoyment of partying at home is the relaxed atmosphere.

3. Consider the composition of your family. If your family is multi-generational, include storage for games and snacks that appeal to all ages.

4. Pay attention to lighting. In addition to general and task lighting, remember to use accent lighting for stunning visual effect, such as the back-lit bar in TNAH.

What's the Key to Hiring Someone to Get Your Project Done Right?

Have you ever wondered why it's so difficult to have quality work done around your home or business? Solving this mystery was a big part of why I started Louisville Handyman thirteen years ago. Like many of you, I grew tired of inconsistent workmanship and reliability when hiring people to do work around my home. Even working with an individual referred by others, I often found that the person's results didn't meet my expectations. Now, thirteen years after starting Louisville Handyman and growing it into the city's largest handyman service and 10th largest full service remodeling company, I can provide you with some insights.

To get your project done right, you have to ensure the individual or business you are hiring has the right skills, right standards and right attitude. When hiring a new craftsman at Louisville Handyman, we normally begin with 100 applicants. After screening resumes, reviewing job experience, digging into skills, checking references and conducting multiple interviews, we generally find two people who should, by all accounts, be stellar Louisville Handyman craftsmen. Here's the surprise: even with all of our screening, only one of those two people usually have the skills, attitude and standards that we expect. In other words, to get to one person that truly has the right skills, right standards and right attitude, we have to get past the 99 that don't.

As a consumer, you should know that the cards are truly stacked against you. Think about it—even with a referral from a friend, you don't really know what you are getting. For example, someone who did a good job laying ceramic tile for your neighbor may or may not have the skills to do your crown molding job. To make matters worse, the individual will rarely tell you he doesn't have the skills or experience, so it's buyer beware. The cards are also stacked against you because it is easy to get caught in the trap of jumping at a cheap price and forgetting to assess whether the individual or company has the skills, standards and attitude. We have completed literally hundreds of jobs where we were hired to fix work after someone chose the low bid. Rest assured that paying twice costs more than awarding the job right the first time. The last reason it's so hard to get high quality work is that attitudes change. Several times over these past ten years, I have had to fire an individual who had a track record of good work, but something changed in their lives and they didn't keep the right attitude to deliver great results.

So, what's the solution? I believe it comes down to hiring a company with an established reputation and multiple talented craftsmen. A company has to maintain a good reputation or they won't be in business long. You should always check a company's BBB rating before hiring them. By hiring a company with multiple craftsmen, you can get the benefits of having the best qualified person for your job assigned, instead of taking your chances on whether an individual has the right skills or not for your specific job.

Hopefully, this article helps solve the mystery.
