Is it March Already?

While it has been a few weeks since I've sent out this newsletter, I've been busy writing up lessons for Stitched Stories, an online creative writing course of textile-themed prompts. I've been getting helpful feedback from participants, and I'm looking forward to running the course again this summer with some improvements. If you are interested in joining the waiting list for the course launch, you can sign up here.

I've been busy making arrangements for a few speaking gigs over the next while. You'll find me speaking about Strange Material: Storytelling through Textiles at the North Vancouver Public Library (March 25th) and Pieces, a textile conference in Courtenay. BC (March 28th).

In April, I'll be working with a group of public librarians in Australia to teach them how to use my books for public programming. This is a first for me and I'm excited about the prospect of working with a group of librarians!

It is not all work for me though - I'm figuring out how to use my brand new Serger and stitching up test projects. I am also working on a top secret knitting project...to be revealed at the end of the month...Want to join in? This is a project that will take 2- 4 hours and needs to be completed by March 1st. Email me at info@leanneprain.com with the subject line TOP SECRET, and I'll include you in the top secret mission plans.

Things That Are Inspiring Me Right Now:

I just discovered Zoe Buckman's Every Curve Project, which "explores the contradictory and complimentary influences of Feminism and Hip-Hop in her upbringing". Using embroidery on vintage undergarments, she decorates the lingerie with lyrics that refer to women from iconic 90's rappers Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. Interesting stuff. (link)

Who says that Real Men Don't Yarn Bomb? Newsweek profiles
Steve Duneier, a 47-year-old from Brooklyn, New York who has started yarn bombing outside in National Parks. While Steve is not the first person to do this (Knitted Landscape and Masquerade were early outdoor y-bombers), his works are beautiful and worth taking a look at (link). I follow him on Instagram.

In an effort to make sure I get more exercise, I've become a Fitbit convert but I can't believe how many Etsy crafters are making fit device bracelets. Fitness + craft together for the win.

This made me laugh: Ikea bans Hide and Seek in their stores in the Netherlands. As far as I know, they haven't banned it in North America - yet.

If I lived in Santa Monica, I would definitely go see Sabrina Gschwandtner's Film Quilts (on until April 18th!)

A couple of years ago when I was in New York, I had the opportunity to attend one of the MOMA Research and Design Salons. While I regret not being to attend more in person, they are now online for everyone to enjoy (link)

Rosalind Wyatt featured on Feeling Stitchy

The popular embroidery blog has an in-depth interview with calligrapher & stitcher Rosalind Wyatt and her Stitched Lives of London Project, which I featured in Strange Material (her work is on the cover of my book as well).

Rosalind will be coming to North America to teach a workshop in New Mexico, May 11–17th.  Click here to read about Rosalind.

Have you heard of 100 in 1 Day? It is a day of urban intervention that takes in major cities throughout the world. Anyone can get involved, and this year it takes place in Vancouver on June 6th. (link)
