WELCOME BACK!...to the busiest/craziest part of the whole school year

See you at these HSB events:

Awkward Prom: March 27, 7:00-10:00pm
Improv Night: April 8, 7:00-9:00pm
Human Foosball: April 19, 2:00-4:00pm

Honors Salons are back! Do you consider yourself an animal lover? Do you think Poe would?

For something completely new and different, join us for this Friday's Honors Salon:
Dr. Matthew Sivils will be joining us for the Honors Salon on Friday, March 27. Dr. Sivils brings a unique perspective blending his backgrounds in English literature and wildlife biology.

In considering the human tendency to imbue animals with symbolic meaning, the French anthropologist, Claude Levi-Strauss, famously wrote that humanity viewed animals not only as “good to eat” but also as “good to think.” But what does this mean when the person doing the thinking is Edgar Allan Poe? First we’ll look at some examples of how Poe employs animals in his stories. Then we’ll consider how we can use these examples not only to better appreciate Poe’s work but also to better recognize how we think with animals in our daily lives.

See you Friday at 3:10pm!

Meet your Honors Liaisons!

Do you know your college's Honors Liaison? Each college at ISU has different requirements for their upper-division Honors students, and your college's Honors Liaison can be a HUGE resource for you in navigating the path to graduating with Honors. College personnel do orientation/info sessions each year to answer questions, but in case you need advice or information in the meantime, you should know your college's Honors Liaison and how to get in touch with them! We've featured three colleges below: Engineering, Human Sciences, and Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Hone your SKILLZ with UHP

The University Honors Program (UHP) wants to help you with your graduate school applications, your capstone project, and abstracts. SKILLZ sessions offer UHP members a chance to learn (or brush up on) skills you've told us you want. Sessions will be held from 3:10-4:00pm on selected, non-Salon Fridays throughout the year. Programs are targeted for upper-division UHP students, but open to any Honors student. We'll ask you to sign up at least 24 hours before the session so we can plan materials and space: email dschumac@iastate.edu to reserve your spot!

The SKILLZ abstract workshop still has space; email Dana for more info or to reserve your spot. New workshops will be offered in the fall!

2015 NSF EPSCoR Internships at the University of Iowa, College of Engineering

Iowa NSF EPSCoR (http://iowaepscor.org) is a 5-year, 20 million dollar grant that involves a partnership between Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa, and the University of Iowa in research about renewable energy (wind and biofuels), energy efficiency and energy policy. In addition to the research goals, the EPSCoR grant seeks to increase the number and diversity of students who choose careers in STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Math). To that end, EPSCoR is supporting paid summer research internships for qualified students.

Internships are 8-10 weeks in length, starting in late May or early June and ending in August. The specific dates are generally flexible and can be worked out after students are accepted. Interns will receive a stipend of $400/week. Room and board will be provided if the student elects to live on campus. Full board will be provided to students living off campus. The intern will be part of a research group and will be mentored by the faculty leader and graduate students in that group.

Students will have opportunities to interact with other student interns while participating in seminars, research lab tours, field trips and social events. Student interns will be expected to do research, participate in weekly lab meetings and all other scheduled events. At the end of the program they will have the opportunity to present their research findings in a culminating poster session.
