Empowering all lesbian, gay, bisexual &/or trans+ (LGBT+) people to be proud of who they are

PROUD2BE NEWS: MARCH 2015

Hi there, what a busy few months it has been in the world of Proud2Be. Here are just a few things we have been getting up to...

THE RAINBOW CROSSING
We have launched a new campaign to install Europe's first permanent rainbow pedestrian crossing, in the rural town of Totnes in Devon.

You may remember, last year, we laid down a temporary crossing outside St Mary's Church in the High Street, in the lead up to the second-ever Pride event in Totnes.

Our co-founder Jon said: “We have had a hugely positive response from the local and national press and the local LGBT+ and wider community have also been hugely supportive and excited by the proposal.”

We have successfully obtained support from the town council and the Traffic & Transport Forum and in the next few weeks will approach Devon County Council with a proposal, asking for its support.

Please pledge your support for our rainbow crossing HERE.

just dance

We are so excited to be hosting a Proud2Be Fundraiser Disco on Saturday April 25th at The Barrel House, Totnes at 8pm til midnight. The disco is open to all lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or trans+ (LGBT+) people, their friends, families and supporters (18 and over).

We will have two fantastic DJ sets from the wonderful Madame Souza and the up and coming Rhi Rhi Rhythm, a 50/50 raffle and a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. There is no dress code other than to wear what you feel comfortable in. Tickets are £7 and are available on the door.

We can't wait to see you there!

#wearehere campaign
Recently, a Home Office Barrister told Proud2Be patron Aderonke Apata, that she couldn’t be a lesbian because she has children.

In response, we are inviting all LGBT+ people to send in photos of them with their children or alternatively, pictures of their family drawn by their children.

Our co-founder Mat said: “We are very proud to know Aderonke. She has shown so much support to Proud2Be and we are honoured to call her a friend. This is our way of demonstrating our solidarity with her and those like her, who are seeking asylum in the UK, on the grounds of sexual orientation &/or gender identity.

Together lets show the Home Office Barrister and all LGBTPhobic establishments, that #WEAREHERE and are Proud2Be Parents, Carers and Guardians.

social group new venue
Our friendly and inclusive social group will have been running for 3 years this July! We continue to see so many wonderful people coming through the doors each month and we are delighted that the group is so popular. In December the social moved to Totnes Progressive School, a lovely venue that suits us perfectly!

As well as catching up with friends we shall be spending the next few months preparing for Totnes Pride. It is a really exciting time to join the group so if you are in the area then do pop by, we are a diverse group from all over Devon!
