This Week in Women's History:
  • March 31, 1492 - Queen Isabella issues the Alhambra decree, ordering Jewish subjects to convert to Christianity or face expulsion.
  • April 1, 528 - The unnamed daughter and only child of Emperor Xiaoming of Northern Wei, succeeded her father as "Emperor." Her grandmother, Empress Dowager Hu, had declared her male and therefore the legitimate heir. She was immediately dethroned and succeeded by Yuan Zhao the next day.
  • April 2, 1991 - Rita Johnston succeeds William Vander Zalm as Premier of British Columbia. Although she didn't win reelection in her own right, she was the first female Premier of a Canadian province.

NTSA Brown Bag Series
April 1, 12:30 pm in Memorial Gym 109

The Non-traditional Student Association is sponsoring a series of seminars focused on non-traditional students. March's  Brown Bag is hosted by the Women's Center. We will be talking about services available to non-traditional students from offices affiliated with the Division of Diversity and Human Rights. Lunch is provided for the first 10 who RSVP. Please RSVP to Cary Lindsey.

Equal Pay Day
April 7, 11 am to 1 pm
Join us in observing Equal Pay Day on Tuesday, April 7th. This date symbolizes how far into 2015 women must work to earn what men earned in 2014. The Women's Center will host a table in the Idaho Commons to raise awareness of the wage gap. Wear red to show your support for pay equity and please stop by and see us!

2015 Virginia Wolf Distinguished Service Awards
April 15, 5:30 - 7:00 pm in the Vandal Ballroom, Bruce M. Pitman Center

Named after former UI professor Virginia "Ginny" Wolf, this annual awards ceremony honors a student, a staff or faculty member, and a community member whose work reflects commitment to advancing gender justice. Join us to honor this year's award recipients with complimentary cake, tea, and punch! There is no charge to attend but space is limited. RSVP to wcenter@uidaho.edu by April 10.   • Accepting Donations for Transgender Clothing Exchange
    March 16 - March 30, Memorial Gym 109
    A financial cost for many people who are transitioning is clothing! Help out by donating clothes you don't need or want anymore to this clothing exchange. Help those transitioning wear the clothes that make them feel most comfortable without the cost of buying a new wardrobe. The Women's Center will host a box through March 30 in which anyone can drop off donations. This exchange is a collaboration between UI and WSU students. Please contact Bekah with questions.

     
  • National Farmworker Awareness Week
    March 24 - 31
    March 24 - 31 - Long Sleeve Shirt Drive
     Drop off long sleeve shirts at the ASUI Office, the Native American Student Center, the Student Diversity Center or the Women's Center. These shirts help protect farmworkers from pesticides and heat.
    March 30 - National Cesar E. Chavez Blood Drive Challenge from 11 am to 4 pm. This is a student-led  initiative engaging on and off-campus community organizations and individuals. To donate blood make an appointment here.
    March 31 - Keynote Address: Yazmin Garcia Rico at 6 pm in the International Ballroom of the Pitman Center.

  • Alcohol Use Screenings hosted by the CTC
    April 1 from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm, Bob's Place
    April 9 from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm, Idaho Commons

    The Counseling and Testing Center will host screenings for alcohol use in the next two weeks. These screenings are free and open to all students in two convenient locations. Stop by to find information regarding risk and safety of alcohol use and how it relates to you.

     
  • 16th Annual Tutxinmepu Powwow
    April 4 and 5, Kibbie Dome on the UI Campus

    April 4 - Grand Entry at 1 pm and 7 pm with dinner at 5 pm
    April 5 - Easter Egg Hunt at 11:30 am and Grand Entry at 1 pm

    The Native American Student Center has presented the University of Idaho's Tutxinmepu Powwow for the past 15 years. The Powwow is a great recruitment and retention tool, as well as a business and communication skill builder for Native Students. Non-Native students and community members benefit from attending and volunteering at the Powwow as they see firsthand the strength and vitality of the Native Culture.   • Native American Arts and Crafts Market
    April 4 from 12 pm to 11 pm and April 5 from 1 pm to 6 pm, UI Kibbie Dome

    The Native American Student Center and the University of Idaho Office of Tribal Relations present the Native American Arts and Crafts Market. The fair will host 20 Native American Vendors to sell their work at the 16th Annual Tutxinmepu Powwow. You will find everything from hand-made beaded jewelry to local and Southern Plains style silver work, clothing items, and Pendleton blankets. Admission is free!   • Mexico Week
    April 6 - 10

    Join the Department of Modern Languages and International Studies as they host Mexico Week featuring:
    "De Peregrina a Peregrina" - Throughout the week in the Reflections Gallery, Idaho Commons
    "De Peregrina a Peregrina" is an exhibit of photographs by Monica Guerrero Mouret featuring the pilgrimages that take place in Mexico City to the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe (Mexico City's oldest and most prominent Cathedral).
    "Espiral" - April 7 at 6 pm at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre
    "Espiral" is a film about women who stayed in Mexico while the men in their lives went north to find their destinies. The film will be introduced by Mexico's Consul Guillermo Ordorica. Admission is free for students with refreshments served.

     
  • 2015 Borah Symposium
    April 6 - 8

    For more than 60 years, the UI 's Borah Foundation has focused attention on the causes of war and the conditions for peace. Its annual symposia bring together world leaders, diplomats, scholars and activists to discuss current problems facing our global community and to offer solutions. The 2015 Borah Symposium titled, "Troubled Borders: Sovereignty, Disease, War, and Refugees," is especially pertinent as national borders are challenged by the Russian incursion into the Ukraine, ISIS threatens to overwhelm and occupy existing nation states, and Ebola crosses borders, including into the U.S. See the schedule of events below.

    "Climate Refugees," a documentary presented by film director, Michael P. Nash at 7:00 pm at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre

  • 2015 WSU Mom's Weekend 5K on the GLO
    April 11
    Registration at 9:00 am, Race at 10:00 am

    Tennis Court Parking Lot in Pullman, WA
    The WSU Sport Management Club is hosting its annual Mom's Weekend 5K again! Whether you walk or run, wear your brightest colors and join to support breast cancer awareness! Register by April 10th and entry fees are $20 for a single runner and $35 for a pair. Day of registration is $25 for single runners and $40 per pair.
