Dear Friends,

As most of you know, I've recently been devoting a lot of my time and energy to my band Gathering Sparks. The trio is going through some important changes that I wanted to let you know about. Sam has decided to pursue other projects and will no longer be part of the group. We are grateful for all his contributions, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours. Jane and Eve will be continuing-- more news to come on that front in the future. In the meantime, we'll have special guests joining us at some of our upcoming concerts and we are looking forward to bringing our music to Kingston, McDonalds Corners (near Perth), Orillia, and Woodstock in the coming months.

Coming up: Jane and I will be holding court at this Sunday's Singalong Soirée at the Tranzac Club here in Toronto. I will also be doing an informal concert with my friend Lorne Brown at the Gladstone Hotel as part of the Storytelling Festival of Toronto this Saturday night (see the calendar below for the details).

In other news, there
are spaces left for the "Dip Dip and Sing" Canoe trip in August, and there's still time to enrol in summer ukulele classes at the Haliburton School of the Arts. Sign up now, avoid disappointment later!

A Few of My Favourite Things

Jayme Stone's Lomax Project
I've been a fan of banjo player Jayme Stone for a while -- he is a genre-bending musician whose playing brings together jazz, world, classical, and folk music in a very inventive way. His latest CD is a collection of songs from the Alan Lomax collection, and it features Jayme in collaboration with some of North America's finest roots musicians. It is fantastic!  http://jaymestone.com/projects/lomaxproject

Alan Lomax and the Center for Cultural Equiry
And while we are talking about Alan Lomax, did you know that over 17,000 of Alan Lomax's sound recordings have been digitized and are available on the internet? It's amazing resource of original source recordings of ballad singers, blues musicians, gospel preachers, prisoners, sailors, and more-- you name it, Alan Lomax collected it. In addition to songs there are interviews and commentary on the songs. The sound recording collection is one tiny part of the website of the Association for Cultural Equity, which houses the Alan Lomax Archive. Hours of fun! Here's a field recording of Down By The Riverside to start you off.

Women's Music Weekend
On another note, my bandmate Jane Lewis helps organize an inspiring weekend for women to make music in a supportive environment. Workshops include vocal play, creative mining, song writing, jamming, restorative yoga, and vocal and performance techniques. http://www.womensmusicweekend.com
