Last month, major community stakeholders joined together for the Historic Core BID's Annual Meeting, where we welcomed talks and updates from honorable speakers Congressman Xavier Becerra (D-CA), Assemblymember Miguel Santiago, and Tom Gilmore of our Old Bank District. The Historic Core BID shared successes and updates from 2014, as well as unveiled our 2014 Annual Report.

Thanks to Tom Gilmore and the Old Bank District team for hosting us in the historic Farmers & Merchants Bank and to all who joined us to honor another great year in Downtown LA's Historic Core.

This month's ArtWalk, happening Thursday, March 12th, will feature several notable shows anchored in the Historic Core.
Gloria Delson Contemporary Arts, pictured above, celebrates their new larger space at 727 S Spring St with "Spectrum," the first full show in their new home.

DAC Gallery at 431 S Broadway celebrates International Women's Day with the opening night of FEMALE POWER.  As part of this exhibition, artists from the Downtown Women’s Center (DWC) - who struggle with chronic unemployment and homelessness, and ECF Art Centers - who live with developmental disabilities, participated in a series of workshops, birthing a new body of works exploring female power in its many guises.

The new second location of London's Howard Griffin Gallery, now here in the Historic Core at 410 S Spring St, welcomes Mexican visual artist Pablo Delgado's full scale installation work, "On Their Level". The exhibition challenges the viewer's perspective by literally changing their point of view, playfully exploring multiple perceptions of society, equality, consumerism and temporality.

Visit the ArtWalk Lounge at 634 S Spring St on Thursday to get a full list of this month's participating galleries.
Our Historic Downtown Farmers Market is seeing its strongest days since it began in July 2012. The market creates a pedestrian-only thoroughfare on 5th Street every Sunday from 9am-2pm and features farmers as well as local vendors, like our newest addition, Vagabond Cheese! Offering fantastic cheeses, charcuterie, accoutrements, and baguettes from Clark Street Bread, Vagabond Cheese joins other Historic Core-based vendors such as Clean Dinner's kombuchas, Renee's flowers, and Lamke's vegan donuts.
New Business Spotlight: Downtown's Historic Core has lots of great bars, lots of great places to grab a bite, and lots of good venues. But few have brought these all together quite like The Regent has with Prufrock Pizzeria and The Love Song Bar on Main Street at 5th St. Classic cocktails are shaken and stirred while indie vinyl spins over at The Love Song. Wood-fired pizzas and fresh salads are served over at Prufrock from lunchtime through late night. Go after catching a show at The Regent, or pick a quiet night and avoid the crowds.
On Saturday, March 28th, the third annual Heart of the City 5K Run/Walk will attract 2,000 walkers, runners, and volunteers to Downtown Los Angeles to support the California Hospital Medical Center. Proceeds from the event will help Downtown's central hospital in its efforts to continue providing services to all in need, as the hospital has continually done since it was founded 128 years ago.

The race will finish with an EXPO at the finish line from 8am-11am, with food trucks, awards, Djs, photo booth, kid activities, and the very popular doggie costume contest.  For more info and to register, visit www.HeartOfTheCity5k.org.

Primary Election Day in Los Angeles was Tuesday, March 3rd. Council District 14, which nearly all of Downtown is situated in, voted current Councilmember José Huizar into another and final term.

Congratulations to CM Huizar and his staff, we look forward to continue working with the Council Office to make sure the Historic Core is moving in the right direction.
