Scandinavian Locations in Los Angeles

Last week the 40th anniversary of the AFCI Locations Show was held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The event makes for a great platform for organizations around the world who want to showcase their different regions to filmmakers and producers in the industry. SACC-LA's Jens Lundén joined our member Film Festival Flix's President/CEO Benjamin Oberman at the event and visited one particular organization, Scandinavian Locations.

Jens Lundén (SACC-LA) together with Julie Linn Melling (Scandinavian Locations), Mikael Svensson (Vice President, Scandinavian Locations), Berit Tilly (General Secretary, Scandinavian Locations) and Benjamin Oberman (President/CEO, Film Festival Flix).

They are a collaboration between Swedish, Finnish, Danish and Norwegian film commissions who together work with promoting the amazing venues and sceneries to be found in Scandinavia towards the film industry. "We hope to meet American producers and tell them about what Scandinavia has to offer" says Teija Raninen from the West Finland Film Commission. The entire crew, at least one representative from each country, attending the event at the Hyatt all described how truly great and diverse the scenery in Scandinavia can be. Berit Tilly from Swedish Lapland Film Commission spoke about the "freshness" and how very "exotic in a different way" really defines Scandinavia. "And don't forget about the fantastic summers in Lappland" (the northern parts of Scandinavia, editor's note) she adds.

Even though a lot of work is put into showing off eye-opening nature such as mountains, winter
landscape, fjords and coasts, a big part of the work Scandinavian Locations assists with is presenting talent, services and stories from the Nordic countries. "It is very informal and customized to the project. We qualify the project and hook people up with potential co-producers and most of us are able to offer paid location tours. It's always informal and customized I would say" says Julie Linn Melling from Danish Film Commission Fyn. "In Denmark we are riding on this huge wave of success right now, which makes our jobs very easy as Danish production companies, directors and script writers are doing really well internationally at the moment." And there are surely other success'. Sigmund Elias Holm from Western Norway Film Commission tells about the Hotel Juvet in his region where they recently have filmed celebrated screenplay writer Alex Garland's directorial debut Ex Machina, starring Sweden's Alicia Viklander. "It just looks so, so cool. It opened earlier in the U.K. and has received raved reviews. Wallpaper (magazine, editor's note) did a feature on the location and called it the best film set they had ever seen." says Holm.

Benjamin Oberman (President/CEO, Film Festival Flix) interviewing Mikael Svensson (Vice President, Scandinavian Locations) at the AFCI Locations Show 2015.

At the event, Film Festival Flix also did a video recorded interviews with the crew which will be put online on their website shortly for a closer look at Scandinavian Locations. You can also check out Scandinavian Locations own website to learn more about them.

The above statement is according to the Bureau Of Labor Statistics and mentioned in an article originally written by Ashley Stahl and recently re-published in Forbes via contributor The Muse. It goes on to mention that;  “Successful people will tell you that they treat every conversation as a job interview. They understand that every coffee, every casual encounter with strangers, and every family dinner is planting a seed for the vacancies of tomorrow.”  You can read the entire article by clicking the link below and we hope you find success at all of  our events and fun opportunities to network.
