Ag in the Classroom Update!

We hope that you had an enjoyable winter break!  Agriculture in the Classroom continues to provide fantastic learning opportunities for students across Saskatchewan.  In this newsletter, events and resources that assist in connecting students to agriculture are highlighted. Cooking Up SK & Exploring Food Science
May 14 (U of S, Saskatoon)
Cooking up SK is a showcase of culinary and presentation skills! Students in Food Science 10 & 30 and Commercial Cooking 10 & 30 compete in their own school, with the winning group advancing to the Provincial Competition. New this year is a concurrent program, Exploring Food Science, offered to students from the same school, who are not competing in the Cooking competition. Students will get an inside look at the exciting world of Food Science through hands-on activities and experiments. Contact Christine chris@aitc.sk.ca or 306-933-5520.
Feeding a Growing World Social Studies Resource
This interactive resource for Grade 7 features multiple components, including a Saskatchewan produced video, SMART Board game, and information sheets to allow your students to explore Saskatchewan's role in global food security. This resource is recommended by the Ministry of Education and components are available on ROVER. Order the complete resource from our website www.aitc.sk.ca.
All About Food: Exploring Canada's food system is the newest AITC Canada resource! Designed for high school students, this resource addresses hot topics in agriculture!  The accompanying interactive website http://allaboutfood.aitc.ca can be used as a teachers' guide and frames the issues around "key questions".  Order print copies of the student guide from our website.
Biotech Kits
Saskatoon & Regina
These kits will engage students in biotechnology activities to generate a greater understanding of the importance of biosciences and modern agriculture. The three Biotech kits feature the following themes: DNA Extraction of a Wheat Germ & Food Dye Electrophoresis (Grade 9 Science Kit), Mad Cow: Electrophoresis (Health Sciences 20 & Biology 30 Kit), and Bacterial Transformation (Health Sciences 20 & Biology 30 Kit). Gee in Genome Classroom Presentations
Saskatoon & area
This one hour classroom presentation is available to schools in Saskatoon and surrounding area. Designed to fit the Science 9 or Biology 30 curricula, students will participate in activities to generate an understanding of how and why it is useful to study DNA, as well as some exploration into careers in biotechnology! The Farm & Food Care Foundation has launched a new edition of the popular publication “The Real Dirt on Farming”, that answers Canadians’ questions about food and farming, and tackles hot topics – like pesticides, antibiotics, hormones and GMOs – head on. Order print copies from our website. This is great information for students doing research or to help you answer any questions you have about agriculture!
