Timotea has been a health promoter in her community of San Onofre for over 17 years.

Timotea has been a health promoter in her community of San Onofre for over 17 years. Last year, she was chosen to become a Mentor for other health promoters in her region because of her outstanding leadership skills and long-term experience. Last December she told us a story of a young mother from her community who had just given birth to her first child.

â€œI would like to give thanks to the people who donate money to help our work in the communities," says Timotea, "because without your help, we would not be able to accomplish very much."

1st Health Promoter and Health Educator Training of 2015

Over this ten-day training, 6 newer health promoters, 3 mentors, and 12 health educators from Nejapa all set aside time to come together to learn from AMOS staff and mentors to increase their knowledge and skills about primary health care for their communities.

They traveled to 3 different locations and learned about:

The mission and vision of AMOS
The importance of taking a census of their community & how to take a census
How to treat a person with/without medicine
How to check a personâ€™s vital signs
How to fill out patient care paperwork
How to coordinate with MINSA
Signs of danger in pregnancy
Breastfeeding support

Where We Serve:

AMOS is now serving alongside 33 rural communities in Nicaragua. Community populations can vary between 200 to 700 individuals. Most of these families have dirt floors, use latrines, wash their clothes in nearby rivers and streams, and let their livestock roam through their kitchen and bedrooms. One of our dreams is to come alongside each family member in a meaningful way to bring about proper sanitation and hygiene so their present and future health will be better than it was yesterday.

At the end of February, a delegation from St Wilfrid's Episcopal Church went to Cumaica Norte to teach women about the importance of getting regular pap smears to test for HPV and cervical cancer.

Before the training a woman asked, â€œDoes all cancer start in the breast?â€

By the end of the training, these women understood what cervical cancer is, where it originates, and how to treat it. They felt comfortable sharing their concerns about their bodies and were intently learning all that the group had to teach them about their health.
