       April 2015 Newsletter:

Hatching New Projects!

Dear Readers,

Fun Food Fact: Did you know that each day of the year is associated with a food holiday, or day of observance?  For example, within North America, January 20th is a day devoted to cheese lovers, the potato is celebrated on March 8th, and the mighty egg is honoured on June 3rd.  Now, not all of these food days give recognition to healthy or local foods.  Junk Food Day, which is celebrated on July 21st, is a key example!  However, unhealthy foods aside, we think that these food observance days are a great way to not only celebrate the foods we eat, but to recognize the food traditions that surround them and the work that goes into bringing those foods to our table.

In exploring the different food holidays, our staff recently surveyed which food holidays our birthdays fell upon.  Overall we ended up with an eclectic mix of ingredients and dishes.  From kale day, hot and spicy food day, pigs-in-a blanket day, to macaroon day, we have the makings one excellent party menu!

Now that we have your attention, CGC does have a  few announcements to make. In March, CGC had to say goodbye to a few staff members.  Rachael Sinclair, Kin Park Youth Urban Farm & Youth Outreach Intern, and Annamarie Couch, our Assistant Property Manager, moved onto other opportunities.  We thank them for being a part of our team and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

We would like to introduce two new staff members.  First our new Assistant Property and Store Manager, Ramona Challenger. She will take the lead in managing the daily ins and outs of running The Station, including taking the board room and kitchen bookings, and the Garden Pantry Thrift Store.  Second, we'd like to introduce Stephanie Cottell, who will manage the Cowichan Agriculture Training Project that's set to begin on April 20th, 2015.  We are so excited to work with Stephanie and to see how she unrolls this amazing project.

Lastly, CGC's staff and board would like to congratulate our Executive Director, Judy Stafford, for winning the Duncan Business Improvement Area Society's "Spirit of Excellence" award. This award recognizes Judy's commitment to the DBIA and her support for the downtown business community. Go Judy go!

(Judy holding her award with the DBIA's Lisa Hykaway & Mark Paetz)

Wishing you a happy peanut butter and jelly day!

Kindly,
The CGC Team
Thank you Rachael Sinclair: A Shining Star

One of our most treasured interns, Rachael Sinclair, wound up her internship with us at the end of March.

We first met Rachael through the VIU Employability Skills program back in the winter of 2012-2013. Rachael and nine other 1st and 2nd year students came to KinPark each week on Thursdays, rain or shine, to shovel manure, pull weeds, shape beds and sow seeds. We were immediately drawn to Rachael’s quirky sense of humour, her generous smile, and her endless enthusiasm. Read more...
Sharing Our Seed Stories: Digital Stories are now Online!

After an exciting year of outreach, public engagement, and interviews, the Cowichan Green Community’s (CGC) Sharing Our Seed Stories project is calling it a wrap!

Funded by Service Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP), this project sought to chronicle the historical and contemporary seed saving practices of the Cowichan Region. Engaging seniors and elders, who have specific knowledge of saving local and heritage seeds, with local youth interested in learning to save seed, the project produced a series of five digital stories that captures their stories about saving seed. Producer Profile: Providence Farm

Providence Farm is one of the true gems of the Cowichan Valley. Having celebrated their 150th anniversary in 2014, they’re a historical one as well.

The farm started with the Sisters of St. Ann who agreed to use the farm for additional programming with Mental Health BC to create job opportunities through horticultural therapy. That grew into many different facets including small engine mechanics, wood work, art, textiles and kitchen programming, just to name a few. Read more...
