May 2015 Newsletter

Hello from Blatch HQ.

Hello and welcome to our May newsletter. The recent rains brought many smiling faces from far and wide into the shop and I hope this trend of happiness continues on the farm over the coming months. It's been an eventful time here on Clarinda Street: we welcomed back Susie from maternity leave, our baby Wilhelmina turned one, Warren has 'retired' (so he thinks) and many of you will be saddened to hear our other baby- Charlie the Great Dane has passed away. More on that later. In our May newsletter- we give you a run down of local farmers' success at the Royal Easter Show, we look into better bearing protection and write you a cheat-sheet on housings and much more.

Best wishes for continued success this sowing season,

Allan

To protect and serve.

Triple-lip sealed bearings offer triple the protection.

Now is the time many customers have been replacing bearings on their augers and groupers. These bearings are often surrounded by grain, fertiliser, chemicals, dust and general contaminates. The responsibility to protect against these contaminates lies with the seals and housings. If your bearing is exposed without a housing, the bearing's seal becomes even more important. Pictured above are two styles of these bearings: the REL triple-lip bearing on the left, utilising a concentric locking collar. On the right is the UR triple-lip bearing which uses grub screws to lock.
So what is the triple-lip seal all about? Just like the name suggests, instead of having a single or double sealing point of contact, it has three. These three lips create three increasingly small barriers between the outside World and the inner workings of the ball bearing.
As we all know, bearings aren't created equal. That's why you'll find two bearings that at first glance look the same, but are very different and are priced accordingly. Various factors contribute here such as brand, country of origin of components such as steel, tolerance for imperfections as well as quality and design of the seals.
A triple-lip sealed bearing, from a top-shelf bearing manufacturer, is the best possible protection against fine contamination getting into the bearing and destroying it. When OEM designers create their products, they'll often put bearings in sealed housings as well, which gives an additional layer of protection.

Guess who's back? Back again?

Susie's back. Tell a friend!

Susie Blatch is back on board part-time, picking up where she left off on the bearings counter as well as learning the ropes in the office from Nancye. So when you hear a British voice on the phone, say g'day to Susie.

Readers' right of reply.

Whose pressed the reply button this month?

A farming customer has sent in a photo of their airseeder newly fitted with our Australian-made airseeder hose. Please keep the on-farm photos coming in!
Above: What at first appeared to be the love-child of a War of the World's tripod and one of our industrial vacuum cleaners, soon revealed itself as a freshly plumbed airseeder. You can see the smooth black and clear Seedflex hose alongside the ribbed yellow and black Tigerflex hose.

The Housing Market

Protecting your bearing investment.

Many customers ask about the differences in housings so here is a quick cheat-sheet on some of the most common housings used in our area. Here's a little challenge for you: If you think you're a bit of bearing master, see if you guess each one before reading the description!
Pillow Block Housing
Prefix: P

This is one of the most common housings used in agriculture and industry. Available in cast iron, plastic, stainless steel, ductile iron and the super strong carbon cast steel. Pictured with a UC style wide inner ring bearing.
Plummer Block Housing
Prefix: SNG

This is like a pillow block but very heavy duty and is split between the top half and bottom. This enables you to wrap it around the shaft without removing anything. These housings take a roller bearing rather than a ball bearing.

Take Up Housing
Prefix: T

These are used on things like drum rollers where threaded rod at the bottom is used to tension, while the channels in the side support the take up housing unit.

Circular Flange Housing
Prefix: FC

This utilises a locating spigot on the back which keeps the housing unit centralised. The circle flange plate offers increased strength.

FL Flange Housing
Pictured is an FL housing, in this instance made from thermo-plastic. We sell thermo-plastic housings to customers involved in food production.

FA Housing
These are popular because you can change the angle for alignment. This is due to the long bolt hole strip on the far side of the image.
HP Special Housing
A pedestal housing like a pillow block housing but can fit in a reduced space.

F Flange Housing
Here is another of the most common housings, in this case made from stainless steel. Stainless housings are popular for use in wet and corrosive environments such as marine applications.
PFL Plate Flanges
This housing is a pair of steel plates that bolt together around an AEL style or "flangette" bearing. Some people call them flangette bearings because they go in flange plates, such as these!

PF Plate Flanges
As above, this is a pair of plates utilising three bolt holes.
Plate Pillow Housing
Prefix: PP

These are commonly seen in evaporative air conditioners because they're very light- perfect for a rooftop! They can also be used with a rubber ring which cushions the bearing.

Remembering Charles

The Prince of Wales

Charlie the Great Dane, our de facto mascot, has died. He's been a regular at the shop for the last two years, greeting customers whether they liked it or not!

Charlie was a rescue pup from a shelter in northern Wales and had been mistreated but was rescued by the Great Dane Society. We adopted him and took him back to London but naturally, when it was time to move back to Oz, Charlie came with us. He's loved life in Oz and especially coming to the shop each day but sadly, like many Great Danes, he twisted his bowels and there was nothing we could do to save him, despite our best efforts. We'll certainly miss the big guy.
