Drug claims now online

We’ve added prescription drugs to online claiming in CARESnet. If you normally pay up front for prescriptions and submit paper claims to Pacific Blue Cross, save time and postage fees by claiming online.

With online claims, you’ll know instantly how much you’ll be paid. Claims are usually reimbursed in 2-3 days and funds are deposited directly to your bank account.

5 things you didn't know about prescription drug pricing

There are a lot of complexities when it comes to prescription drug pricing. From patents to pharmacy mark-ups, here are 5 things to know about what determines the cost of your medications.

Learn more here.

Brand-name drugs are costing you

It’s a fact: one in 10 Canadians struggles to pay for medications even if they have insurance. And one in six BC residents does not adhere to their prescriptions because of cost.

If you’re using a brand name medication, you may be spending more than three times what you would pay for the generic alternative.

Generics are copies of brand name drugs and are just as safe and effective. Both go through the same testing and quality control standards and include the same active ingredients.

Extended health care benefits go a long way to offset the cost of your prescriptions, but few employers can afford to cover 100% of drug costs—especially brand name costs. Next time you fill a prescription, save money and help keep drug benefits sustainable by choosing a generic equivalent.

Shop smarter with Pharmacy Compass

We all shop around to find the best prices on everything from gas to groceries, but did you know that prescription drug prices can also vary between stores?

Save on your share of prescription costs by searching Pharmacy Compass before filling your prescriptions. The online tool shows the average price for prescription drugs at different pharmacy locations, based on the past three months of prescription data from Pacific Blue Cross.

Pharmacy Compass will even show you the difference between generic and brand name prices, along with dispensing fees at each pharmacy.

Not sure if a drug is covered by your plan?

Our drug lookup tool is an easy way to check! Sign in to CARESnet using your policy and member identification number. From the drug lookup toolbar on the home page, enter the drug name or DIN (Drug Identification Number) to view coverage for different quantities and concentrations.

It’s tax time - Don’t forget about the METC!

Did you know that you can claim medical expenses on your tax return? Some medical expenses not covered by your extended health benefits may be considered a medical expense for tax purposes. Visit the Canada Revenue Agency website to learn more about the Medical Expense Tax Credit.
