Message from the President

The year's at the spring
And day's at the morn;
Morning's at seven;
The hill-side's dew-pearl'd;
The lark's on the wing;
The snail's on the thorn;
God's in His heaven –
All's right with the world!
                                   -Robert Browning

I love this setting of Robert Browning's poem by Amy Beach and have been recently coaching it in my studio.  There is such a sense of rejuvenation both in the text and in Beach's ecstatic and soaring vocal line!   Personally, I feel as if the arrival of spring each year launches me leaping into a whole new mind-set – my students perk up, the school year starts to ramp up for a grand finale, and everyone is sprinting to the finish line that is summer! This year is no different and I am thrilled to share all the news events for the Chapter in this our quarterly newsletter.

Within our Chapter, there are so many exciting opportunities for our singers to continue their training throughout the summer.  While many of the large and established programs run by NATS Ontario Chapter members have sent their casting notices (think COSI and COAA for example), there are a host of new programs cropping up!  Scroll down for more information on Laurier’s new Art Song Intensive, for the University of Toronto’s Choral Conducting Symposium, and a new opera scenes program called Long Reach Summer Intensive independently run by Michael Donovan.  And don't forget about  Western University’s new Music Theatre on the Thames program that was featured in the last newsletter and our recent invitation to the upcoming 2015 IRCPA Networking Dinner with Joan Dornemann. Voice training in Ontario is alive and well and I hope you will take a moment to support the fantastic work that our colleagues are doing in our community. If you are running a program, headed out in the world to teach at one, want to be part of one, or have students that are looking for something to do this summer, drop me a line and let's get ourselves and our students connected and singing. Keep checking the NATS Ontario website as I will post new events there as they come into my mailbox.

Finally, NATS Ontario is thrilled to announce that our Spring Professional Development Day will be on Body Mapping with Melissa Malde, co-author of the book What Every Singer Needs to Know About the Body.  Our Special Projects team, headed up by Alison Moodie, has made arrangements for Melissa to join us from Colorado to present a six hour hands-on workshop…Scroll down for more information.  I hope to see you there with your yoga pants on!

As we look forward to spring, I would love to hear from you - email me at president@natsontario.org.

What is Body Mapping?
Body Mapping is the conscious correcting and refining of one’s body map to produce efficient, coordinated, effective movement. Body Mapping, over time, with application, allows any musician to play or sing like a natural. It is a tool that is useful in many different settings from music studios to exercise studios and beyond. Body Mapping not only helps musicians avoid injury, it also enhances musicians’ technique. When musicians have an accurate perception of their anatomy and physiology, their playing or singing becomes more efficient, enabling greater freedom and expressiveness.

INTERNATIONAL RESOURCE CENTRE FOR PERFORMING ARTISTS PRESENTS TORONTO EVENTS FOR MUSICIANS & MORE IN MARCH

ENCOUNTER WITH METROPOLITAN OPERA'S JOAN DORNEMANN: MARCH 28-29

WHO'S WHO IN THE INDUSTRY: MARCH 29
The International Resource Centre for Performing Artists (www.ircpa.net) – a service organization for Canada’s musicians – presents two events at the end of March 2015, aimed at helping singers, instrumentalists and others in the field to develop their full potential and improve their chances of success.

Encounter With Joan Dorneman
Friday, March 27, 2015 and Saturday, March 28, 2015
McLaughlin Studio, Canada Opera Company, 227 Front Street East, Toronto, ON.

Joan Dornemann, prominent Metropolitan Opera assistant conductor, co-founder of the International Vocal Arts Institute, and highly respected opera coach, will work with singers mainly interested in careers in opera, oratorio or recital in a two-day Encounter, Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28 at the McLaughlin Studio, courtesy of the Canadian Opera Company, 227 Front Street East, in Toronto.

The “Encounter” will take place over four sessions, each day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2-5 p.m. More information, and membership and sign-up request forms are available from http://ircpa.net or by calling 416-362-1422 or e-mailing info@ircpa.net.

With her extensive knowledge of employers’ needs, Ms. Dornemann is able to share with each singer their strengths and weaknesses, in a supportive and collegial environment, and offer various options for a career focus. This information enables the artist to make informed or enlightened decisions as a professional.

These two days are the perfect opportunity for the singer who is unsure whether he or she is ready for important auditions, to gain vital confidence and direction. They also allow emerging coaches or collaborative pianists to develop their skills.  The general public is encouraged to observe the preparation required for the advancement of artists they will soon see on major stages.

The cost for singers to participate in the Encounter is $200 for the two days.  For observers, one session is $25, or all four for $80.  For IRCPA members, the cost to observe is $20 for one session, or $60 for the four. Membership forms can be filled out on the website, http://ircpa.net. No membership fee is required.

Vocal teachers are invited to attend as guests, but must RSVP to info@ircpa.net.

Who's Who in the Industry Panel
Sunday, March 29, 2015, 2:00PM - 5:00PM
CSI Annex, 720 Bathurst Street

Artists and support personnel involved in opera, classical, jazz and other music fields are invited to learn from and interact with leaders in the business, at the IRCPA’s Who’s Who in the Industry panel, Sunday, March 29, 2-5 p.m. at the Centre for Social Innovation, 720 Bathurst Street (south of Bloor).  The cost is $20 for IRCPA members, $25 for non-members.

In collaboration with The WholeNote Magazine, and moderated by broadcast personality Alexa Petrenko, this high-voltage session will examine the challenges and advantages of the present day, through the perspectives of music presenters, managers, performers, journalists, publicists and more – to date including Chris Lorway, director of programming for the Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall; Jose Ortega, Lula Lounge; conductor/presenter Boris Brott; journalist/composer Michael Vincent (Musical Toronto); David Perlman, editor-in-chief, The WholeNote Magazine; publicist Linda Litwack; and artist managers Annick Carriere of Station Bleue, Montreal, and Robert Missen of Bobolink Agency. Toronto.

This panel could be crucial for both emerging and established artists, administrators, and the general public to understand who’s who in the industry and how or why they make decisions, which are vital to artists’ careers and future audiences.

More details and IRCPA membership forms are available from http://ircpa.net, or by calling 416-362-1422 or e-mailing info@ircpa.net.

There’s more to come April 10-12.  The International Resource Centre for Performing Artists will also present Hot Topic Workshops April 10-12 at the Paintbox Bistro, Canadian Music Centre and JAZZ.FM91.  The topics have been requested through focus groups and round-table discussions, and reflect a vital need in the musical community.

These March and April programs are made possible, in part, by the Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, WholeNote Media Inc., the Canadian Music Centre, Canadian Opera Company, Paintbox Bistro, Jazz.FM91, and private donations.

The IRCPA also provides year-round services to artists on request, including round-table discussions, research, feedback auditions, mentoring sessions and consultations.
Founded and led by award-winning artist manager Ann Summers Dossena, the IRCPA aims to “turn potential into accomplishment”.  Charitable donations to these programs can be made through www.Canadahelps.org.  Travel miles can be donated to bring up international panelists, through the Aeroplan Beyond Miles program.
