Starr Oberlin
Starr Oberlin and her husband Lionel had been restoring and preserving history long before they moved to Castle Rock. Starr's passion for history began when they purchased and restored a brick farm house in Pennsylvania that was constructed in the 1800's. In 1974 Starr and Lionel moved to Idaho and once again purchased and restored an old house built in 1904 and then successfully listed the house on the National Register of Historic Places. Then in 1988 they moved to Colorado to be closer to their grandchildren and decided to call Castle Rock home. Their love for history prompted the couple to purchase the historic Hammer House on the corner of Cantril and Second Streets and along with restoring the rhyolite house that was built in 1881, Starr was able to get it listed on the National Historic Register. After opening an antique shop in downtown Castle Rock she founded the Castle Rock Historical Society in 1991 and as president she helped the society purchase and develop the town's D&RG railroad depot into a history museum. Starr's drive for historic preservation helped the city adopt a Historic Preservation Ordinance and under that ordinance numerous properties now have the title of "local landmark" and several of those are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Castle Rock was lucky when she and Lionel choose to make this town their home and to use their passion and love of historic preservation to keep the history of Castle Rock alive.
