February Highlights
 
 
  • Foundation of Goodness' ongoing programmes have benefited 4,577 beneficiaries via 30 productive empowerment sectors covering 50+ villages free of cost from the South, North and East during this month at the cost of Rs. 6,256,737.99 (USD 45,721/-) .
 
  • In the month of February, we have received as many as 37 exciting collaborative value addition initiatives worldwide, by way of numerous concepts to be considered in improving the quality of life through our unique one of a kind holistic model.
  • The HOW Foundation in Melbourne, Australia organized a ‘Goodness Breakfast’ with cricketing legends and FoG Trustees, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena at the Langham Hotel to raise funds for Foundation of Goodness’ humanitarian activities.
  • The Foundation of Goodness felicitated the best performers from 2013 and 2014 across all FoG courses and programmes to motivate and encourage all beneficiaries.
  • Tesco sponsored t-shirts for FoG staff in addition to their sponsorship of the Foundation's empowerment activity sectors.
  • Gourmet Goodness special spice blends were launched at Tesco stores across UK. 100% of all Gourmet Goodness profits go towards FoG's humanitarian activities.
  • The MCC Cricket Sponsorship for 11 outstanding cricketers were presented for the 7th year running, to motivate and develop rural cricketers to excel at the game.
  • 25 bikes donated by Athula Samarasekera & Friends were distributed in Mankulam. This is the first batch of bikes donated by this group, with more to follow in the coming months.
  • Sports equipment donated by Mr. Bill Deutrom & Friends were distributed to Nuffield School for the Deaf, Skandavarodaya College and Stanley College in Jaffna, Isipathana College in Colombo and Vivekananada Vidyalayam in Kilinochchi as well as to the Northern Cricket Academy in Oddusuddan.
  • The Foundation of Goodness organised a very special cookery demonstration for Jon Froda and his Team, for his documentary showcasing Sri Lankan food.
  • The Second Batch of cataract surgeries were conducted for rural beneficiaries with kind donations from the Sri Lanka Association in Geneva (SLAG) as facilitated by the Foundation of Goodness in association with Help Age, to help restore eyesight for those without the financial means to undergo surgery.
  • 6 girls from the FoG Netball Team were selected to be a part of the National Pool to attend the upcoming ‘Junior Nationals’, which is a wonderful assurance of the high standard of training we provide at the FoG Sports Academy.
  • The FoG Academy Volleyball Club Team participated at their first tournament which was a district level tournament and emerged champions which is an excellent start.
  • Indika Dayarathna conducted a monitoring and evaluation programme in Seenigama and organised a special session with the staff to instruct them on how to compile effective monthly reports.
  • Students from the MS Office, Kids Computer and Patchwork & Curtain making courses at the Rathgama Village Heartbeat Project graduated earlier this month. We wish them the best of luck in pursuing their future goals.
  • The Children’s Goodness Clubs were very active this month celebrating Independence Day. The Akurala and Kahawa CGC members conducted a musical programme in Kahawa and served herbal drinks to local elders at the Akurala Temple while the Rathgama, Udumulla and Seenigama CGC’s conducted drawing, speech and essay writing programmes to commemorate the day.
  • Autism Awareness Programmes were conducted by the Community Psycho-social Unit for the Akurala and Udumulla Children’s Goodness Clubs so that the members attained an in depth understanding on how to integrate, accept and interact with those with special needs.
  • The Community Psycho-social Unit conducted a variety of programmes at the Child Resilience Centre including developing presentation skills, teaching the value of money and other creative activities. They also conducted workshops about spiritual development and anti-bullying awareness programmes during the month of February.
  • Mr. Dorian Cole and Ms. Lorna Fortune along with Sister Canice conducted a seminar on family counselling for the Community Psycho-social Unit counselors to broaden their skill range. 
  • This month, students from Asian International School and Gateway College visited the MCC Centre of Excellence in Seenigama as a part of their community outreach programmes.
  • The Colombo Operated Model United Nations continue to conduct their yearly stationery drive donating all the proceeds to the Foundation of Goodness to distribute among needy children and schools.
  • The Medical Centre conducted their monthly medical programme at the Wellawatta Elders’ Home to ensure their good health.
  • Outstanding beneficiary community aid projects for this month include the Electrical Installation & Maintenance course students doing all the wiring for a beneficiary’s home and the weekly beach cleaning campaigns conducted by the Diving & Training Centre students.
  • Stockport Grammar School, UK and Royal Grammar School, UK as well as Gateway College, SL conducted sports tours to the Seenigama Sports Academy and played friendly matches against the FoG cricket teams.
  • Mr. Hemantha Devapriya conducted a cricket coaching clinic at the MCC Lords grounds to improve the performance of FoG Sports Academy cricketers.
  • New AstroTurf was installed at the Seenigama Wimala Buddhi Surrey Oval cricket grounds.
  • 3 Dental Students from Slovenia have volunteered at the FoG dental clinic to provide humanitarian services and add value to the services provided free of charge by FoG.
  • The Navodya Centre for Special Children continues to receive support from Muthiah Muralidaran & Foundation of Goodness, and Recycling4Smiles have also continued supporting weekly oral care programmes in the Seenigama region.

  • The Foundation of Goodness is delighted to have 7 volunteers from Slovenia, USA, France and Sweden with us this month, adding value to our work while 74 visitors toured the MCC Centre of Excellence in Seenigama.
  • Village Welfare projects amounting to Rs. 915,484- (USD 6,690/-) divided among areas such as healthcare, housing, sports, electricity, water and general welfare were facilitated this month to uplift the living standards of rural villagers to ease their burden in addition to the ongoing campus style of operation in place.

Sector Spotlight: 

Education scholarships are provided to students with financial difficulties who will benefit from the assistance to complete their education instead of dropping out of school without completing their studies. The scholarship programme has been active since 1999, and provides help for higher-education including medical school, as well as A-Level students and school pupils. Individual donors from all over the world support these students through their university years. Students receive financial support to help with: Accommodation Fees, Food and Welfare, Study Needs (including books and stationery) and Exam & Tuition Costs.
